The landscape of healthcare leadership is set to change with the recent announcement by the American College of Physicians (ACP) that it has appointed LeRoi Hicks, MD, MPH, MACP as the new Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer. This announcement was made public on March 23, 2026, with an official start date set for July 6, 2026.

Hailing from Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. Hicks comes equipped with a wealth of clinical and executive experience, making his appointment a significant milestone in the history of the ACP. Notably, he will be the first African American physician to hold this prestigious position. The decision followed a rigorous national search conducted by a committee appointed by ACP's Board of Regents, underscoring Dr. Hicks’ exemplary qualifications for this pivotal role.

Dr. Hicks currently holds the position of President at ChristianaCare's Wilmington Campus, a critical hub for healthcare services in Delaware. His responsibilities at ChristianaCare encompass overseeing the facility's strategic vision, financial health, and daily operations. He has built a formidable reputation for advocating equity in healthcare, aiming to address persistent disparities and focusing on the social determinants that impact health across various populations.

Former ACP CEO, Dr. Darilyn Moyer, praised Dr. Hicks' capability, expressing confidence in his business acumen, commitment to health equity, and patient-centered approach. Dr. Moyer will retire in July 2026 after a notable tenure leading as the longest-serving female physician in a medical specialty society in the U.S.

In his new role, Dr. Hicks will take on the responsibilities of the senior staff officer at ACP, directly implementing the College's policies and activities. His credentials are noteworthy; he is board-certified in internal medicine and was elevated to the status of Mastership in the American College of Physicians in 2024, one of the highest accolades bestowed by the organization, recognizing his excellence in medical practice and leadership.

Dr. Hicks remarked on his selection, stating, "I am humbled to be selected to lead ACP at a time when internal medicine physicians are navigating profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment." He underscored his readiness to champion the missions and strategic imperatives of the ACP while promoting equitable health access for all.

Dr. Hicks’ professional journey includes several influential roles within the healthcare system since joining ChristianaCare in 2014. His previous positions included vice chair of the Department of Medicine and chief medical officer of Wilmington Hospital. Before joining ChristianaCare, Dr. Hicks served as division chief of Hospital Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, honing his skills in leadership in the medical field.

Dr. Hicks received his undergraduate degree from Howard University in 1991 and later earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. His rigorous training continued with a residency at Mount Auburn Hospital where he served as chief resident. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in general medicine and faculty development at Brigham and Women's Hospital and obtained a Master of Public Health from the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health.

As the largest medical specialty organization in the United States, the American College of Physicians represents over 163,000 internal medicine doctors, subspecialists, and medical students globally. With Dr. Hicks at the helm, the ACP aims to enhance its commitment to improving healthcare quality while navigating the complexities of today’s health environment.
