Completion of the Wai-ta Second Geothermal Power Plant



The Wai-ta Second Geothermal Power Plant, constructed by Wai-ta Second Geothermal Co., Ltd., a subsidiary funded by Furusato Heat Power Co., Ltd., located in Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, officially commenced operations on March 14, 2026. A completion ceremony was held on April 15 of the same year, celebrating this major achievement.

A Project Rooted in Community Collaboration


Located in the Wai-ta district of Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, the site has historically been rich in geothermal resources, contributing to local industries and the life of residents through the use of hot springs and steam. This project reflects the synergy created through ongoing dialogues with community members, prioritizing the local economy and coexistence as key operational goals.

Since its establishment in August 2022, the Wai-ta Second Geothermal Plant has collaborated with the Wai-ta Community Co-operative, along with support from various stakeholders and residents, leading to the groundbreaking ceremony in June 2024 and ultimately to its commercial operation three and a half years later. The inspection event held on April 14 included local dignitaries, such as the mayor of Oguni Town and the governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, who joined the celebration and shared insights on the significance of geothermal energy rooted in the community.

During the completion ceremony on April 15, numerous community members and construction personnel were invited to pray for safety and stable operations.

Engineering Excellence Delivered by TGES


The engineering and construction of the power generation facility, as well as the thermal transport equipment, was entrusted to Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation (TGES). Utilizing their extensive experience in energy-related installations and advanced engineering techniques, the company ensured that the construction prioritized safety, quality, and environmental considerations, leading to the successful completion of the plant.

A Vision Rooted in Community Synergy


Furusato Heat Power Co., Ltd. promotes a next-generation business model for geothermal development, emphasizing co-creation with the community while effectively utilizing local geothermal resources. In July 2025, the company formed a strategic partnership with Baseload Capital, a global investment firm specializing in geothermal development, guided by the expertise gained from projects worldwide. This collaboration aims to further establish geothermal energy's potential, building upon the trust developed within the local community.
