Milford Mining Secures $25 Million from USDA to Boost Utah's Mining Operations
Milford Mining Secures $25 Million from USDA
Milford Mining Company Utah (MMCU) has made headlines recently, announcing a significant financial boost in the form of a $25 million loan guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Business and Industry Loan Guarantee Program. This funding is crucial for the company's operations in Milford, Utah, as it aims to enhance and expand its mining and processing facilities. The intended investments will double its copper throughput and significantly improve the valuation of the company by the end of next year.
Creating Jobs and Economic Opportunities
With this expansion, MMCU anticipates creating around 100 new jobs, in addition to its existing workforce of 180 employees. The increase in jobs is a vital part of MMCU's strategy to strengthen not just its own operations, but also the local economy. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins expressed pride in the USDA's support, emphasizing the potential of such investments to empower rural communities and stimulate American industries.
"The future of rural communities looks brighter with initiatives like these, which illustrate what can happen when we channel capital into rural regions," Rollins noted. She highlighted that homegrown businesses such as Milford Mining play a pivotal role in creating jobs and enhancing local economies while improving the nation’s mineral supply chains.
Investment in Sustainable Practices
The proposed investment is structured as a 16.5-year arrangement with privately-financed backing from Magnolia Guaranteed Lending, part of Kentucky-based Magnolia Bank, a USDA-approved lender. Subject to necessary conditions and completion of financing, the investment will focus on modernizing processing equipment, removing operational bottlenecks, improving overall efficiency, and ultimately, doubling the company’s production capacity.
Stan Summers, USDA State Director for Utah, remarked on the importance of such financing for fostering economic growth in rural areas. The financing not only supports Milford Mining’s operations but aims to ensure long-term economic stability within the region, providing essential resources to its community members.
As one of the few U.S. operations capable of producing copper today while preparing for the future, MMCU’s facilities also hold significant quantities of diverse minerals including tungsten, antimony, and rare earth elements. Currently, 90% of their 62,000 acres remain unexplored, representing vast untapped potential for resource extraction. This successful mining endeavor suits the nation's growing demand for critical minerals especially given the increasing focus on domestic sourcing to reduce reliance on foreign minerals.
Aligning with National Objectives
The strategic plan aligns with federal goals to enhance domestic mineral production, as outlined in previous executive orders by the Trump Administration. The arduous year-long process leading to this conditional commitment involved rigorous reviews and detailed evaluations of MMCU's business model, management practices, and environmental impact, ensuring that the investment is sound and beneficial.
Roger Barris, chairman of MMCU, expressed excitement about this milestone in their operations. He mentioned that with the support from Magnolia Guaranteed Lending and the USDA's guarantee program, they are set to make substantial strides in not only meeting national demands for critical minerals but also in fostering new job creation and ongoing economic opportunities within their locality.
In conclusion, the funding from the USDA marks a pivotal step toward revitalizing the copper production industry in Utah. It showcases how necessary investments can stimulate growth in rural areas while ensuring that American industries remain competitive and resilient in a market that increasingly favors sustainability and local sourcing of minerals.
