Special Exhibition: "Water Landscapes - Taikan's Ocean and Rivers"
Currently held at the Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Museum in Taito City, Tokyo, the special exhibition "Water Landscapes - Taikan's Ocean and Rivers" is showcasing the unique artistry of Japan's famous painter, Yokoyama Taikan. This exhibition will run until December 21, 2025, and aims to shed light on Taikan's exploration of water as a motif in his works.
Yokoyama Taikan is best known for his depictions of Mount Fuji, yet his artistic repertoire spans various forms, including floral and landscape paintings. This exhibition specifically highlights his lifelong fascination with water, exploring how he captured its beauty through light reflections, the movement of waves, and the rhythmic flow of rivers. Attendees can immerse themselves in a selection of works that illustrate Taikan's creative prowess and technical diversity.
Unique Works from the Museum's Collection
The Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Museum boasts an exclusive collection of artworks themed around the sea and rivers. Visitors can gain insights into Taikan's creative process and distinctive techniques through these masterpieces. The museum, housed in the artist's former residence and studio, provides an intimate atmosphere where one can truly appreciate the essence of Taikan's art.
A notable piece on display is Taikan's "Moon Viewing Hotei," which portrays the deity Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, who is believed to bring good fortune, health, and family harmony. In this artwork, Hotei is depicted enjoying the beauty of a full moon while relaxing on a boat. The ethereal space between Hotei and the moon is delicately rendered, inviting viewers to engage their imagination while also capturing the essence of air and light through Taikan's distinctive 'Hōrō style' technique. Visitors are encouraged to admire this piece closely, free from any glass barriers, ensuring a personal viewing experience.
Taikan’s Final Hanging Scroll: "Shijisan-sui"
Another highlight of the exhibition is Taikan's last hanging scroll, "Shijisan-sui." Created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Academy), this monumental piece spans 27 meters in length, illustrating the natural beauty of Japan throughout the four seasons—from the sunrise over mountains to the moonlit shores. The exhibition features sections displaying the bamboo groves of Saga-no in late summer and the autumn foliage along the Hozu River.
