Samaritan's Purse Expands Assistance After Hurricane Helene
A year and a half has passed since Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in western North Carolina and other parts of the Southeast, yet many families are still grappling with the aftermath. In response, Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization, is actively working to support long-term recovery efforts. Recently, they announced the expansion of their rebuilding efforts, adding
19 new locations across four states.
This initiative aims to assist families facing ongoing hardships by not only rebuilding homes but also offering support for significant repairs and providing new mobile homes. "The destruction from Hurricane Helene has left lasting scars on our communities. We recognize that there are still great needs, and we want families to know that it’s not too late to receive assistance," stated
Franklin Graham, the president of Samaritan's Purse.
Since the hurricane, Samaritan's Purse has successfully built
26 new homes and has
30 more currently under construction. They have also delivered over
80 mobile homes and completed essential repairs on more than
100 houses. In total, the organization has approved assistance for over
180 families for various rebuilding and repair needs. Each home provided is fully furnished, showcasing the organization’s commitment as a reminder of God's love and generosity.
Among the recipients is
Treva Pruitt, a local mother who, along with her son
Gregory, received a new home in Ashe County, North Carolina. After experiencing a water-damaged foundation and mold infestation, Treva had nearly lost hope of rebuilding. Her spirits were revived when she received help from Samaritan's Purse, stating, "I kept telling Gregory, 'We get to go home today.' I’m just so excited and so happy. The Lord has been really good to us, and I feel like He always provides what you need."
The organization is currently accepting applications for various types of assistance in the following locations:
- - North Carolina: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey Counties
- - Tennessee: Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington Counties
- - Florida: Perry, St. Petersburg, and Tampa
- - Georgia: Valdosta
