Covation Biomaterials Achieves Mechanical Completion of New Plant
Covation Biomaterials LLC, an innovative player in the biomaterials sector, has made significant strides in sustainable material production. Recently, the company reported the mechanical completion of its first commercial facility dedicated to producing bio-based THF (bioTHF) and bio-tetramethylene glycol (bioPTMEG). This milestone, confirmed on April 20, 2026, marks a critical point not only for Covation but also for the broader goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence in material production.
A Focus on Sustainability
The facility, located in Qidong, Jiangsu province, China, utilizes a groundbreaking process technology developed by CovationBio that is set to revolutionize bio-based materials. The plant is expected to operate in three phases, with a total investment of 10 billion RMB, aimed at achieving an annual capacity of 500,000 tons of bio-based materials. Currently, the first phase stands complete, boasting a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year of both bioTHF and bioPTMEG. Commercial production is anticipated to kick off in the latter half of 2026.
Given the urgent need for sustainable alternatives, CovationBio has launched the brand Xatryx®, designed to introduce new non-food bioPTMEG products. The establishment of Xatryx® signifies the company’s commitment to exploring pathways that enhance material performance while also contributing to the decarbonization of the materials sector.
Xatryx®: A Green Alternative
The Xatryx® bioPTMEG serves as a “drop-in” replacement for conventional fossil-based PTMEG, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable resources. This innovative product is derived from agricultural by-products, ensuring that food supply chains remain unaffected. Notably, the sustainable credentials of Xatryx® include:
- - Substantial Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The production process aims to drastically decrease emissions compared to traditional methods.
- - Renewably Sourced: Utilizing annually renewable materials ensures a consistent supply without competing for food resources.
- - Enhanced Performance: Xatryx® maintains high performance standards that are compatible with existing processes, allowing downstream customers to transition smoothly to these sustainable materials.
