Sakura Paks and NSK Toyama Jointly Develop Eco-Friendly Packaging Solutions

Innovative Packaging Development by Sakura Paks and NSK Toyama

Sakura Paks Co., Ltd., in collaboration with NSK Toyama Co., Ltd., has developed an innovative packaging solution for large bearings that emphasizes sustainability and practicality. This new packaging incorporates a recycled reinforced cardboard called "TRI-WALLPAKⓇ" on its sides, significantly reducing weight and improving ease of unpacking and disposal. Notably, this new design aims to decrease lifecycle CO2 emissions by 46% compared to the conventional wooden packing boxes that have been traditionally used.

Background of the Development

Overview

In their commitment to promoting a sustainable society and achieving carbon neutrality, the NSK Group has been implementing various strategies to enhance sustainability in logistics. These include reducing and reusing packaging materials and improving transport efficiency. The joint development with Sakura Paks focuses on enhancing usability while substantially lowering environmental impact by re-evaluating the packaging lifecycle (manufacturing, usage, and disposal) of large bearings.

Details

Historically, the transportation and storage of large bearings required durable packaging, which has typically meant the use of heavy wooden crates. While these wooden boxes provided the needed durability, they posed challenges due to their weight and disposal difficulties. Furthermore, customers reported that dismantling wooden crates was cumbersome, prompting NSK Toyama to partner with Sakura Paks, a comprehensive cardboard manufacturer based in Toyama, to achieve greater environmental benefits and ease of dismantling. This collaborative effort led to the successful testing that confirmed using reinforced cardboard for the sides would maintain box strength.

Overview and Features of the New Packaging

Significant Weight Reduction and CO2 Emissions

1. By replacing the wooden sides with recyclable reinforced cardboard, the new packaging effectively reduces both industrial waste and disposal costs. The packaging's lightweight nature has been improved by 42% compared to the traditional design, and overall lifecycle CO2 emissions have been reduced by 46% from the typical wooden boxes used prior.
2. The new design also decreases the required number of nails and energy consumption during manufacturing, further contributing to its eco-friendly profile.

Improved Unpacking and Dismantling Usability

1. The new packaging allows the side panels to be easily separated from the base, facilitating quick unpacking and product retrieval. The design also supports traditional handling operations, including forklift engagement and lifting, thanks to its notched structure.
2. It should be noted that due to the heavy weight of large bearings, it is recommended to limit stacking to a maximum of two layers for safety during storage.

Future Outlook

This new packaging solution is set to be used for NSK Toyama’s large bearings and is expected to be implemented across other NSK facilities in the near future.
