A Cultural Experience: San Mile's Popup Shop in Shibuya
Japan’s rich cultural heritage is once again captivating the world, as
San Mile, a brand focused on KIMONO for international audiences, opens its first-ever popup shop in the vibrant district of Shibuya, Tokyo. Operated by
Miki Corporation, under the direction of President Yoshinobu Kumagai, this popup shop marks an important milestone in the brand’s journey to showcase Japan's traditional garments to the world.
Located within
Shibuya Loft, the popup shop launched in conjunction with the upcoming World Athletics Championships, ensuring that visitors experience the essence of Japan while enjoying the athletic spectacle. The store features a range of new products, including the popular
Printed Hanten series, known for their casual yet refined aesthetic, appealing especially to inbound tourism. Also featured are new collections including the
Black Mon-tsuki Haori and the
Black Haori, marking the evolution of traditional wear into contemporary fashion pieces. Unique decorative items, like the cat figurines with limited designs, further enrich the shopping experience, offering a glimpse of
Japan’s culture that is wonderfully unique to the popup.
Spotlight on the Printed Hanten
One of the standout items, the
Printed Hanten, has its roots in the Edo period where it served as a comfortable yet stylish garment for daily wear. This modern iteration retains the spirit of Japanese elegance while being adaptable to contemporary wardrobes. Made using traditional techniques, the prints convey the unique family crests that have been used for centuries, highlighting the skills of artisans from Kyoto with over
90 years of dyeing experience. The dynamism of color and design encapsulated in every Hanten pays homage to Japan's history while appealing to modern sensibilities.
Highlighting the Black Mon-tsuki Haori
The
Black Mon-tsuki Haori is another jewel in San Mile’s collection. Historically reserved for men’s formal wear since the Meiji era, this garment embodies the elegance required for ceremonies and formal gatherings. San Mile reinterprets this traditional piece, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into today’s fashion landscape. The essential design respects the historical significance of the
Ura-gasuri (the inner lining designs) which were often created by revered Edo-period artists. By collaborating with contemporary artists, San Mile bridges tradition and modernity while paying homage to this exquisite craft.
