Revolutionizing In-Car Experiences: LG and MediaTek at Auto Shanghai 2025
From April 23 to May 2, 2025, the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2025) showcases a groundbreaking partnership between LG Electronics, a leader in mobility technology, and MediaTek, a global semiconductor powerhouse. Together, they are unveiling a revolutionary Android-based framework that supports multiple users for in-vehicle infotainment systems.
A Game-Changer for In-Vehicle Entertainment
The newly introduced Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) framework marks the first of its kind implemented on the Android Automotive OS (AAOS) by Google. This innovative solution addresses the increasing demand for enhanced content utilization in vehicles. As the screens in vehicles evolve in size and diversity, the CMU framework enables multiple passengers to enjoy various digital entertainment options simultaneously via a single Android operating system.
Imagine a scenario where the driver has full access to the navigation system while the passenger is streaming videos, and the rear-seat passengers are engaged in games – all happening concurrently and independently, in compliance with safety protocols.
Previously, standard vehicle configurations required multiple virtual Android Machines (VMs) to manage a single Center Information Display (CID) and two Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) screens. The CMU framework simplifies this process by integrating everything into one Android operating system, significantly reducing CPU, memory, and storage requirements while minimizing system load.
Tailored Digital Experiences
The CMU framework enhances in-car experiences by creating personalized digital environments for each passenger. Users can log into their designated screens, connect Bluetooth headphones or gaming controllers, manage privacy settings, and even share films, games, and audio across multiple displays. Parents can set up child safety locks to ensure a secure and age-appropriate environment for younger passengers.
Automakers also stand to benefit significantly from this user-friendly architecture. The CMU framework promotes advanced user experiences even on less powerful CPUs, effectively cutting costs and resource demands.
Introduced as a primary feature of AAOS15, the framework incorporates several exclusive attributes from LG, including independent Bluetooth headset support, text-to-speech functionality, child safety locks, and intuitive gesture mirroring. LG leverages decades of experience in optimizing Android mobile performance, a capability honed from its operational expertise in the mobile business sector.
Cutting-Edge Technology Enhancements
In August 2024, LG and MediaTek announced the upcoming integration of MediaTek's latest automotive System-on-Chip into the CMU framework, which is expected to enhance computational power, streamline development processes, and boost efficiency.
To visualize the system's potential ahead of its market launch, LG and MediaTek showcased their IVI solution, featuring a CID and two RSE displays. Mike Chang, Vice President at MediaTek, remarked, “By demonstrating the live capabilities of the CMU framework on the MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit MT2718, we are revealing the future of in-vehicle experiences. These solutions meet automotive reliability standards and empower manufacturers to develop innovative designs.”
Eun Seok-hyun, President of LG Vehicle Solution Company, added, “Our commitment to revolutionizing in-vehicle experiences through innovative technologies like the CMU framework is another critical step in realizing our mobility vision. Looking ahead, we will continue to expand our collaboration with industry leaders like MediaTek to develop more integrated solutions that transform vehicles into true living spaces on wheels, offering unmatched connectivity, entertainment, and personalization.”
As LG Electronics leads the charge in bringing unique, human-centric innovations to the automotive industry, the future of mobility continues to unfold with promising advancements that prioritize user experiences. More details can be found on LG's global mobility website.
