E.W. Scripps Company Recognized for Hurricane Assistance with NAB's Prestigious Award
E.W. Scripps Company Receives National Honor for Hurricane Relief Efforts
In a remarkable display of community service and dedication, the E.W. Scripps Company has received the prestigious 2025 'Service to America' Award from the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). The accolade recognizes the company’s significant contributions in aiding communities affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. These hurricanes, which struck the Southeastern U.S. in quick succession, were among the top ten most financially devastating storms in American history.
The Scripps organization, which operates more than 60 local television stations across the country, demonstrated a clear commitment to supporting communities during these crises. By leveraging its media reach, Scripps ensured that viewers were well-informed about the hurricanes' developments. Reporters provided continuous real-time updates, highlighting critical information about community evacuations and guiding residents on how to best prepare for the storms.
During this tumultuous time, the Scripps Howard Fund, a public charity established by Scripps, preemptively organized with local stations and the Scripps News team to launch disaster relief campaigns. Following the storms, these campaigns came to fruition, promoting fundraising initiatives across various platforms, including on-air, online, and via social media.
The community responded generously to these calls to action, resulting in an impressive total of $289,000 raised for 29 local nonprofits that were crucial to disaster relief efforts. This level of engagement showcases not just the urgent need for assistance in these communities, but also reflects the public's willingness to support those in distress.
"This award is a testament to the profound public service role our local broadcast teams play within communities – providing them with critical information during times of crisis and fostering human connection when it's needed most," said Adam Symson, president and CEO of Scripps.
Every dollar raised through their campaigns directly facilitated immediate relief and long-term support, instilling hope and resources for communities starting their recovery.
The NAB Leadership Foundation will honor this year’s winners during a gala event, the Celebration of Service to America Awards, scheduled for June 10 in Washington, D.C. This ceremony is a celebration of excellence in community service and philanthropy, featuring a range of local radio and television stations that have displayed a commitment to their communities.
The E.W. Scripps Company, founded in 1878, continues to be a key player in American broadcasting. With its extensive portfolio of media outlets, Scripps not only informs but also connects communities through its role in local journalism. The organization upholds a commitment to quality reporting, going beyond mere news coverage to engage actively with audience needs, especially during difficult times.
In addition to news dissemination, their philanthropic arm, the Scripps Howard Fund, supports journalism education, childhood literacy, and local charitable causes. It champions the significant impact of informed communities and enhances the journalistic profession through grants, scholarships, and community engagement initiatives.
As Scripps proudly accepts this honor, it sends a powerful message about the essential role media plays in community resilience and recovery efforts. The company exemplifies the thought that, in times of adversity, a committed and compassionate response not only helps in immediate relief but strengthens the fabric of the community itself.
With ongoing efforts to support local charities and elevate community voices, Scripps is a stellar example of how media can be a catalyst for good, offering light and guidance when most needed.
