Synopsis of Giselle

Act 1 unfolds in a quaint village in medieval Germany during autumn. Giselle, a vibrant young woman with a frail constitution, lives with her mother, Berthe. Unknown to Giselle, the nobleman Albrecht has disguised himself as a peasant to woo her, while her childhood friend Hilarion harbors doubts about Albrecht's true identity and is jealous of their burgeoning romance.

As the village dances in celebration, Berthe warns Giselle not to overexert herself, recalling a local legend that girls who die before marriage become the spirits known as Wilis, condemned to dance eternally. This foreshadowing becomes eerily significant when Albrecht’s betrothed, Bathilde, visits, and Hilarion, filled with jealousy, reveals Albrecht’s identity during a crucial moment, resulting in heartbreaking tragedy for Giselle.

Act 2 transports us to an eerie forest cemetery where the Queen of the Wilis, Myrtha, calls Giselle back to join their ranks. Both Albrecht and Hilarion arrive to pay their respects to Giselle, only to be ensnared by the vengeful spirits. However, Giselle intervenes to protect Albrecht from a deadly fate, demonstrating the unwavering power of love amidst despair.

The performance offers a poignant exploration of love, betrayal, and the unbreakable connections that transcend even death.
