SU2C Initiative Takes Aim at Lung Cancer Early Detection



The fight against lung cancer is about to enter an exciting new chapter. Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C), a charitable organization aimed at accelerating cancer research, has awarded funding to three groundbreaking research teams dedicated to developing noninvasive methods for the early detection of lung cancer. This funding marks the beginning of the SU2C Lung Cancer Early Detection Challenge, aiming to accelerate the discovery of innovative, cost-effective screening tests leveraging liquid biopsy technology.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with many individuals diagnosed in alarming circumstances, including those who have never smoked. Despite the life-saving potential of annual low-dose CT scans in identifying early-stage lung cancer, this promising option is often underutilized, particularly among high-risk individuals, including long-term smokers. Even more troubling is the rising incidence of lung cancer among demographics traditionally not categorized as high risk, highlighting an urgent need for more accessible screening approaches.

SU2C President and CEO, Dr. Julian Adams, emphasizes the critical importance of addressing these issues. “We know that low-dose CT can save lives, but the uptake of this screening method is unfortunately low. There is a desperate need for cost-effective, user-friendly alternatives for lung cancer detection,” he stated.

The initial funding aims to foster research that can lead to substantial advances in early detection methodologies. The projects currently focused on include:

1. Detection of TP53 Mutations via Nasal Brush Cells: Led by Dr. Cecilia Yeung from Fred Hutch Cancer Center and Dr. James Willey from UToledo Health, this project explores a method for detecting TP53 mutations in airway cells collected using a nasal brush. The research builds off prior studies linking these mutations to lung cancer, potentially offering a noninvasive alternative to more invasive techniques like bronchoscopy.

2. Reveals Raman Biofluid Assay: Under the guidance of Paul Scott and Timothy Triche from Avrok Biosciences, this project will further enhance a blood-based test that employs Raman spectroscopy along with artificial intelligence techniques to identify early lung cancer indicators. Early tests have shown this assay's high sensitivity and specificity, marking it as a potentially promising screening tool.

3. Autoantibody Detection for Lung Cancer: Led by scientists Paul Lampe and Kristin Lastwika at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, this project aims to develop an assay that could detect cancer-specific autoantibody-antigen complexes, which may prove useful in identifying lung cancer types such as small cell lung cancer and squamous cell carcinoma earlier than conventional methods allow. Previous studies indicated that this assay could recognize lung cancer even in samples collected two or more years before diagnosis.

Dr. Adams concludes with a sense of urgency and hope regarding these developments: “It’s critical to catch lung cancer as early as possible. With this challenge, we aim to encourage innovative and novel research that could make the early detection of lung cancer far more common than it is today, potentially saving countless lives.”
