Volta Labs Expands Long-Read Sequencing Capabilities with New Oxford Nanopore Library Prep Application

Volta Labs Enhances Long-Read Sequencing with New Application

On June 13, 2025, Volta Labs, a company focused on genomic applications, unveiled their latest tool aimed at streamlining long-read sequencing processes. This new application automates the library preparation for the Oxford Nanopore LSK114 model on their Callisto™ sample preparation system, significantly broadening its capabilities in genomic research.

As the demand for long-read sequencing increases, this addition allows researchers to perform batch processing with improved flexibility and throughput. By automating the library prep process, the application enables laboratory technicians to allocate their valuable time to other pressing projects, which is particularly beneficial for population-scale academic studies and clinical clientele.

A Game-Changer in Laboratory Efficiency

The innovative library preparation application is designed with complete automation in mind, ensuring that the integrity of DNA is preserved throughout the workflow. The miniaturized reactions, facilitated by Callisto's proprietary digital fluid architecture, enhance cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality output. Early access partners reporting on their experiences have indicated marked improvements in both efficiency and the quality of the libraries prepared using the LSK114 automation workflow.

“We are excited to introduce this application to the Oxford Nanopore community,” said Udayan Umpathi, the founder and CEO of Volta Labs. “This innovation builds upon our success with PacBio HiFi automation and enhances our mission to optimally serve single-molecule sequencing applications. The synergy between Oxford Nanopore technology and Callisto is truly revolutionary.”

Abdul Mohammed, the Product Director at Volta Labs, noted, “The genomic community has been eagerly awaiting a more accessible automation solution for long-read library preparation protocols. Our LSK114 application delivers just that. Labs can now scale their Oxford Nanopore sequencing efforts without the traditional complexities of automation development, all while ensuring library quality remains uncompromised.”

The application allows for the concurrent processing of up to 24 samples, mirroring the capabilities of the PromethION 24 device. This level of automation not only facilitates improved productivity but also simplifies operational protocols, enabling labs to keep pace with the rapidly growing field of genomic research.

Availability and Customization

The new Oxford Nanopore LSK114 library prep application is now available to existing Callisto customers as a software upgrade and will be included in all new Callisto installations. Compatible reagent kits optimized for the Callisto platform ensure consistent performance and simplify ordering processes. Notably, the Callisto sample preparation system is exclusively designated for research purposes.
