Conclusion of the CLS Program at Okayama University
On August 7, 2025, Okayama University celebrated the closing ceremony of the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, which it has been conducting under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State since 2019. This year's program saw 24 American university and graduate students immersed in Japanese language and culture for about eight weeks, from June 12 to August 6. They gathered at the International Exchange Hall to reflect on their experiences in Okayama alongside the university's president, faculty members, and fellow students.
The ceremony commenced with remarks from Board Member Masahiro Suga, followed by an encouraging address from President Yoshitomo Nasu. He likened the students' journey to climbing a mountain, indicating that while they reached one goal, new challenges await. He acknowledged the hardships the students faced during the program and emphasized that overcoming such challenges would serve as a significant asset in their future lives. He inspired them to continue striving towards their goals.
Following the speeches, the students, representing various class groups, shared their reflections. They expressed their joy in the daily lessons, the insightful learning experiences gained through research projects in neighborhoods such as Kyoyama and Yokage, and the lasting bonds formed with their roommates, language partners, and fellow CLS participants. Gratitude towards the language instructors and program staff was also conveyed.
A surprise video showcasing the activities throughout the program was then screened, allowing the participants to reminisce about the fun and fulfilling moments they shared. Subsequently, Vice President Takayoshi Suzuki, who serves as the CLS Institute Director, concluded the event with a closing message. He noted that this program not only fostered academic growth but also nurtured friendships among students from different backgrounds. He encouraged them to leverage these experiences in their future endeavors.
After the ceremony, participants took part in a group photo session with program associates, roommates, and language partners, marking the end of their eight-week journey. Okayama University looks forward to its ongoing engagement as a distinctive research university, fostering global talent and promoting collaboration.
