University of Maryland to Launch AI-Focused MS in Marketing for 2027

UMD Smith School Introduces AI-Driven MS in Marketing Program

The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business is making a significant leap into the future of education with the introduction of its new master’s program in marketing. Set to commence in the fall of 2027, this master’s program is a one-year, intensive course designed to bridge the gap between marketing strategies and cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology.

In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, marketing professionals face the challenge of adapting to new technologies, particularly generative AI and various customer engagement platforms. Recognizing this need, the Smith School's Master of Science in Marketing (MSM) program is crafted to provide students with hands-on experience and a comprehensive understanding of how to incorporate these advancements into practical marketing strategies.

The 30-credit program is tailored for early-career professionals eager to deepen their marketing skills. The curriculum covers essential topics such as marketing strategy, brand management, and consumer insights, with a specific focus on the application of AI in these areas. Students will have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning through consulting projects, executive presentations, and teamwork assignments, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Judy Frels, the MSM academic director and a clinical professor of marketing, emphasized the importance of this curriculum by stating, “Artificial intelligence – in all its current and future forms – is changing the field of marketing and the skills needed by those in marketing roles.” She further explained that this program aims to merge foundational marketing principles with the latest AI tools, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to navigate the future of their field.

Throughout the two-semester program, students will not only learn about marketing fundamentals but also the strategic application of AI as a resource. Graduates will emerge with practical skills that are incredibly relevant in today’s AI-driven business landscape, enhancing their employability in various roles including brand development, digital engagement, and campaign management. In fact, according to the latest statistics from Smith's Office of Career Services, 81.2% of business master’s program graduates found employment within six months after graduation, reflecting the program’s strong reputation and the skills it imparts.

As marketing continues to evolve, the MSM program places a strong emphasis on fostering creativity, strategic thinking, and technological competence among its participants. By focusing on AI applications combined with human insights, the curriculum prepares students for the complex dynamics of modern marketing practices.
