Akashiyasu's Artistic Journey Featuring Tokugawa Museum Treasures

The world of art is set to bloom with the upcoming exhibition featuring the works of Akashiyasu, who has taken inspiration from the treasured artifacts housed in the Tokugawa Museum. Kicking off on March 14, the exhibition titled "Mujinabakeru Exhibition" will tour through three prominent cities: Nagoya, Tokyo, and Kobe, including a special collaborative display at the Tokugawa Museum later this summer.

Central to the display is Akashiyasu’s artistic endeavor, where he has ventured into creating a masterpiece modeled after the "Golden Shinnō statue"—an artifact believed to have been used by the first head of the Owari Tokugawa family, Tokugawa Yoshinao. Inspired by a long fascination with this statue, Akashiyasu expressed, "Having continued this program, I have been drawn to the Shinnō statue that kept catching my eye."

His creative approach involved using a traditional method known as "Arimatsu Shibori," which has enjoyed a legacy of over 400 years in the Nagoya region. The technique, known for its intricate tie-dye patterns and textures, has allowed Akashiyasu to reimagine the ancient statue in a new light, resulting in a vibrant work that exudes a unique aesthetic appeal. The varying shades and patterns developed through the Shibori technique add depth to the piece, highlighting both modern creativity and traditional craftsmanship.

When reflecting on the completion of his work, Akashiyasu admitted, "It’s quite nerve-wracking to create alone. I realized just how challenging the ancient technique of Shibori really is." His appreciation for the craft speaks volumes about the connection between cultural heritage and contemporary expression.

Each city hosting the exhibition will display this remarkable piece alongside an array of merchandise, including T-shirts featuring an embroidered version of the Shinnō statue character, Bakeeru-kun. Additionally, other exclusive items, such as plush toys, compact mirrors, and eye masks, will also be available for fans and art enthusiasts alike.
