Celebrating the Arrival of Tottori Watermelon Season with Special Fair in Tokyo

Celebrating the Tottori Watermelon Season

The much-anticipated season for Tottori watermelon has finally arrived, heralding a delightful time for food lovers. Known for its juicy sweetness and hefty size, Tottori watermelon is a standout fruit of the early summer harvest in Japan. As part of the “Food Paradise Tottori,” this region is blessed with a plethora of delectable ingredients such as seafood, fruits, and rice throughout the year.

This year, despite facing challenges like low temperatures and insufficient sunlight during spring, the resilient producers have managed to cultivate high-quality watermelons. Thanks to their meticulous care and favorable weather conditions later in the season, Tottori watermelons have maintained their reputation for being sweet and refreshing. The average weight of this year's crop is 9.27 kg, and the average sugar content is an impressive 12.2 degrees, making them a must-try.

Starting from June 10th, the “Tottori Watermelon Fair” will be held at the Tottori Okayama Shimbashi-kan in Tokyo, where visitors can indulge in an assortment of limited-time dishes crafted using Tottori watermelons. Guests will also have the chance to participate in exciting games and experiences that showcase the charm and allure of this exquisite fruit.

About Tottori Watermelon 2023

Tottori watermelons rank fourth in national production volume, making them a significant fruit native to this region. Growing in an environment characterized by long sunshine hours and distinctive temperature fluctuations between day and night, they exhibit remarkable juiciness, large size, and robust sweetness.

During a recent assessment on May 26, the average sugar content measured an enticing 12.2 degrees, with an average weight of 9.27 kg established. Although the initial growth was slow due to adverse weather, conditions improved after mid-March, allowing for an earlier harvest this year, approximately three days ahead of last year.

Peak shipping for the watermelons is expected from early June to late June, with sales goals set at 273 yen per kg, aiming for a total sales value of 3.7 billion yen. The campaign and promotions for Tottori watermelon will extend to various locations throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area, including antenna shops and major retailers.
