Okayama University Holds First Session on ESD for 2025, Aims for Sustainable Development

Understanding ESD at Okayama University: A Step Towards Sustainability



On July 16, 2025, Okayama University conducted its inaugural session themed "Deepening Understanding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)" at its Tsushima campus. The gathering brought together university executives and representatives from various departments to engage in open discussions about key issues tied to the institution’s sustainable future.

This session serves as an essential platform, positioning ESD as a core trait within higher education at Okayama University, with the goal of supporting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session commenced with Iwabuchi presenting on “Sustainable Urban Development in Okayama City: ESD and SDGs.” He outlined the unique characteristics of ESD initiatives within Okayama and how they correlate with the city's development goals. Following him, Hattori spoke about the city's concrete ESD and SDGs action plans, sharing historical context and specific initiatives that illustrate the city’s commitment to sustainability.

Fujii’s presentation, titled “The History and Current State of ESD at Okayama University,” wrapped up the speaker sessions as he discussed the evolution of ESD at the university, its achievements, and future directions. This discussion emphasized the importance of integrating ESD practices in educational frameworks to contribute effectively to global sustainability efforts.

After the presentations, a vigorous Q&A session ensued, fostering dialogue regarding the promotion of ESD and SDGs at Okayama University. In his closing remarks, President Yasutomo Nasu addressed the attendees, stating, “ESD is not an unrelated topic for any department.
