Engaging in Forest Restoration with the ODEN Stool
Starbucks Coffee Japan, in collaboration with Kirishima Sake and the city of Miyakonojō, has embarked on an exciting new project aimed at forest restoration. As part of the
Miyakonojō Resource Circulation Forest Project, also known as ODEN, they have introduced the
ODEN Stool, allowing even those from afar to participate in forest conservation.
The Launch of a New Initiative
Starting from December 2025, Starbucks and Kirishima Sake partnered with local universities and community members to advance this initiative, which utilizes resources within the region. They are currently conducting experiments focusing on compost production using coffee grounds and sake lees in collaboration with students and professors from the Department of Environmental Horticulture at Minami Kyushu University.
In 2026, the project expanded its efforts by providing native seeds, such as acorns from
Ichiigashi trees, to be cultivated on-site at
KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia. This initiative not only aims to enrich the local ecosystem but also educates community members on sustainable practices and forest management.
The ODEN Stool
The newly developed ODEN Stool represents a unique opportunity for individuals to contribute to forest restoration while enjoying a piece of local craftsmanship in their homes. Made from locally sourced Ichiigashi wood and handcrafted by skilled artisans, each stool resonates with warmth and quality.
Starting May 20, 2026, these stools will be available for purchase through the more trees official website. Each sale will partially fund reforestation activities in Miyakonojō, allowing purchasers to meaningfully engage in local forest conservation from the comfort of their homes.
By choosing an ODEN Stool, individuals can live sustainably and support the nurturing of future forests. This initiative not only brings beauty into homes but also fosters an appreciation for nature and local resources.
Recent Events and Future Plans
On April 26, 2026, a workshop was held to further promote the growth of the acorn seedlings that had sprouted using the compost made from local coffee grounds and sake lees. Approximately 30 members of the community, including customers, local businesses, and students participated in transplanting the seedlings. Over 150 acorns have already germinated, demonstrating the potential of this collaborative effort.
In the upcoming autumn, seeds will again be gathered from Ichiigashi trees, and the community will be invited to contribute to a second round of seedling growth. This initiative exemplifies the collaboration between Starbucks, Kirishima Sake, Miyakonojō, more trees, and local universities, all working towards building a vibrant and sustainable forest for future generations.
