Gibraltar Life Insurance's Commitment to Mathematics Education
Gibraltar Life Insurance Co., Ltd., located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, has proudly announced a generous donation of 1 million yen to the Public Interest Foundation Math Olympiad Foundation this year. This contribution underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to promote mathematics education and foster the healthy development of youth, marking 35 years of continuous support.
The Math Olympiad Foundation plays a crucial role in selecting and dispatching participants for international mathematical competitions, including the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which dates back to its establishment in 1991. The foundation was inspired by the late Saburo Kai, the honorary chairman of Kyokuei Life Insurance, the predecessor of Gibraltar Life, who recognized the significance of the Math Olympiad as early as Japan's inaugural participation in 1990. Motivated by the desire to ensure Japan’s continued participation in the IMO, he rallied support from various corporations to establish the foundation, alongside his own contributions. The foundation remains dedicated to this mission and has continued to thrive, thanks in part to Gibraltar Life’s commitment to donating funds since its inception, totaling approximately 67 million yen to date.
In addition to monetary support, Gibraltar Life Insurance has historically provided office space to the foundation until 2005, fostering a close relationship between the two entities. This partnership is vital in nurturing young talent and promoting a strong foundation in mathematics.
The importance of mathematics extends beyond competitions; it is core to the products developed in the life insurance sector. Actuaries, who employ probability and statistical methods, are central to this realm, and Gibraltar Life boasts a team of 31 professional actuaries contributing across various fields as of November 1, 2025.
The company recognizes that cultivating mathematical thinking can unlock a myriad of opportunities for the future. With a forward-looking vision, Gibraltar Life Insurance remains committed to supporting the foundation’s activities, paving the way for the next generation of problem solvers and critical thinkers.
The Role of the Math Olympiad Foundation
The Math Olympiad Foundation is dedicated to organizing and overseeing Japan's participation in international competitions such as the IMO and the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO). This foundation's work includes conducting research and promoting math education within high schools and middle schools, thereby contributing to the advancement of mathematics and the healthy development of youth in Japan.
By recognizing and nurturing young individuals with exceptional mathematical talents through these competitions, the foundation encourages collaboration among youth who share a keen interest in mathematics and sciences. The overarching goal is not only to support budding mathematicians but also to enhance the overall dialogue around mathematics education in Japan, paving the way for innovation and inspiration in generations to come.
As Gibraltar Life Insurance continues to support this noble cause, the alignment of their mission with the Math Olympiad Foundation serves as a hallmark of corporate responsibility and community engagement. Together, they are shaping the future of mathematics in Japan, ensuring that young minds are equipped with the tools needed to thrive in a complex, mathematical world.
