Urielle's Inspiring Journey Towards a Bright Future in Education

In the heart of the Central African Republic, a young girl named Urielle is changing the narrative for children with disabilities. At just 20 years old, she is a beacon of hope and determination, embodying the spirit of resilience despite having lost her sight at the tender age of three. Her story reflects not only her personal triumphs but the significant impact of initiatives supporting education for children with disabilities.

Sitting in a classroom, Urielle immerses herself in her studies, tracing the unique patterns of Braille on the paper before her. "I lost my eyesight when I was three, but that hasn't stopped me. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of independence, hard work, and chasing my dreams," she recounts passionately.

Her journey is made possible through a UNICEF-supported training center funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) that offers educational opportunities specifically designed for visually impaired children. This center, one of three in the capital city of Bangui, provides children like Urielle with the chance to learn Braille and gain access to education—often for the first time.

Each day, a special tuk-tuk arrives at Urielle’s home, ferrying her to the training center where lessons are conducted by visually impaired teachers, assisted by sighted staff. The curriculum adheres to the national education standards, allowing Urielle to learn vital skills, such as reading and writing in Braille. These skills have ignited a newfound passion within her.

"I love sharing stories, especially about social issues. My favorite subject is social studies because I enjoy learning how people around the world live and face challenges," she states with enthusiasm. However, the road to education has not been easy. In a society where those with disabilities often face stigma, Urielle bravely recalls the hurtful words of neighbors who doubted her potential.

"Some neighbors and even relatives told me I was useless and should focus on housework instead of school. Thanks to my parents' unwavering support, I learned to ignore those voices," she explains.

Urielle is acutely aware of education’s power to broaden her horizons and shape the future she envisions for herself. "The more I learn, the more stories unfold in my mind. That's why I'm determined to become a journalist," she says resolutely.

Beyond her studies, the training center also offers vocational courses to help build various competencies, enabling former students to find employment, with some stepping into public service roles. In a country marred by conflict and adversity, where access to quality education is a luxury for many, every success story, like Urielle's, illuminates the potential within all children, especially those facing significant challenges.

The Central African Republic remains one of the toughest places in the world for children, plagued by violence, displacement, and natural disasters. The long-standing instability has severely disrupted public services, significantly restricting educational access. For children with disabilities, who often face even greater exclusion, the situation can be dire. Luckily, Urielle's parents recognized her limitless potential and sought out the support she needed.

Since 2017, ECW has partnered with organizations like UNICEF to fund initiatives that promote access to quality education in safe learning environments, strengthen local education systems, and provide targeted support for girls and children with disabilities.

Urielle is not content with merely being an excellent student; she aspires to become a Paralympic athlete, training three times a week in long-distance running. As she continues her educational journey, Urielle remains committed to storytelling, with a dream of one day hosting her own radio show.

"Storytelling is my passion. I know the road ahead is long, and I have at least six more years before university, but I will achieve my dreams!" she beams.

Urielle's ambition knows no bounds, and her achievements serve as a testament to the potential of every child when provided with the right education, resources, and support to thrive. Through her journey, Urielle inspires not only visually impaired children but all those who dare to dream against the odds.
