Tamron Railway Scenery Contest: Celebrating Through Photography



Tamron Co., Ltd., a leading optical equipment manufacturer based in Omiya, Saitama, recently concluded its much-anticipated "18th Tamron Railway Scenery Contest: My Favorite Railway Scenery Best Shot." Supported by the Saitama City government and the Saitama City Board of Education, this contest aims to enhance regional vitality and promote both railway and photography culture.

On October 27, Tamron published the results of the contest on its website, showcasing the creativity and skills of a plethora of participants, totaling 7,308 submissions from roughly 1,962 individuals. The contest included various categories to engage a broad audience, such as a dedicated section for participants under 18 years old (U-18).

The 18th contest introduced two entry methods: print submissions and online applications, adapting to emerging trends in photography while allowing more ways for individuals to participate. Additionally, the contest continued to encourage unique and humorous entries beyond traditional railway photography, which has always been a hallmark of this annual event.

This year, an array of 47 award-winning pieces was selected through a rigorous judging process. Some of the top accolades included the "Grand Prize of the General Category" awarded by Saitama’s Mayor, and the "Grand Prize of the U-18 Category" presented by the Director of Education of Saitama City. The contest also featured a special award for unique and humorous works, recognizing outstanding creativity in capturing railway imagery.

General Category Grand Prize – Saitama City Mayor's Award

  • - Photographer: Shigeru Shimizu (71 years old, Saitama)
  • - Title: "Fugaku E5 Series"
  • - Judge's Comments: The photo captures a moment discovered during a stroll, effortlessly showcasing the essence of regular life intersecting with railway culture. The simplicity, along with the vibrant representation of the E5 train's unique colors, demonstrates the creator's keen understanding of photographic composition.

U-18 Category Grand Prize – Saitama City Board of Education Award

  • - Photographer: Kiru Yada (14 years old, Tokyo)
  • - Title: "Waiting in the Snow"
  • - Judge's Comments: This piece beautifully illustrates a scene post-snowfall, where the reflections from signal lights create an enchanting atmosphere around a snowman. The photographer's ability to evoke a narrative through a single image showcases their artistic perspective.

Unique/Humor Award – Saitama Chamber of Commerce Award

  • - Photographer: Kazuhiro Kato (69 years old, Mie)
  • - Title: "Cold Weather Measures"
  • - Judge's Comments: The humor presented in the contrasting outfits and actions of the characters in the photograph creates a delightful story. The image brilliantly captures a fleeting moment filled with site-specific context, showcasing the photographer's narrative skill.

Digital Exhibition


In recognition of all award-winning works, JR Omiya Station will feature these entries on its digital signage on several notable dates:
