Abu Dhabi Embraces AI and Energy for Sustainable Growth in 2026

The Corridor to a Sustainable Future: Abu Dhabi Leads the Way

Abu Dhabi is at the forefront of a revolutionary shift, highlighted during the opening of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026 by HE Dr Sultan Al Jaber. The event illuminated a future driven by artificial intelligence (AI), computational power, and energy, which are pivotal to human progress. In his address, Dr Al Jaber emphasized the indispensable connection between advancements in technology and the energy required to sustain them.

A Growing Energy Demand

The coming years are set to see a surge in energy demands. According to Dr Al Jaber, it is projected that the power requirements of data centers will increase by more than 500% over the next 15 years. Additionally, air travel is expected to double, and urban populations are anticipated to grow by 1.5 billion people, all contributing to a significant demand for energy across various sectors. "To responsibly and affordably meet this demand, we must acknowledge the reality that over 70% of energy will still derive from hydrocarbons," stated Dr Al Jaber. He positions this reality not as a limitation but as a catalyst for sustainable growth.

Pragmatic Economic Structures

The UAE is tailored to respond to these burgeoning demands, driven by pragmatic economic strategies and visionary leadership. According to Dr Al Jaber, the nation has established its economic infrastructure with long-term growth in mind, emphasizing the need for consistency and balanced decision-making. This structural foundation enables the UAE to harness both renewable sources and traditional hydrocarbons, creating a robust energy landscape that's ready for future challenges.

He elaborated that the UAE combines carbon-efficient hydrocarbons with clean energy initiatives. From massive solar projects to innovative nuclear technologies, the country is committed to integrating these resources into an efficient energy system. Over the years, Masdar, also known as the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, has emerged as a leader, developing renewable energy projects in multiple countries. With a current portfolio of 65 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, Masdar is progressing towards its ambitious target of 100 GW by 2030.

AI as an Industrial Strategy

Dr Al Jaber declared, “AI has evolved into the operating system of our industrial strategy.” The incorporation of AI into the UAE's various sectors is crucial for optimizing and enhancing productivity across the energy and industrial landscape. This strategic focus allows enhanced efficiencies, ensuring that the growth driven by AI is sustainable and responsible.

Partnerships for Progress

In his address, Dr Al Jaber promoted the UAE's reputation as an open platform for collaboration, emphasizing the importance of “radical collaboration” as a hallmark of the country’s strategy. He stressed that the UAE's stability, long-term vision, and advanced logistical capabilities make it an attractive destination for global investors seeking to engage in meaningful partnerships. "If you want to engineer the future, the UAE is where that innovation is happening, where gigawatts of power converge with terabytes of data."

Legacy and Impact

Reflecting on the legacy of the founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Dr Al Jaber underscored the importance of measuring progress through human dignity and impact. The Zayed Sustainability Prize was established to honor this enduring legacy, with over 400 million people positively affected globally.

Conclusion: Address of the Future

Dr Al Jaber concluded his speech with an invitation: "Bring your ambition, your ideas, your capital, and your technology, and put them to work where sustainability thrives and opportunities unfold. The future of human progress is waiting, and its address is Abu Dhabi." With a clear vision and a commitment to sustainable development, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as the nexus for future advancements in energy and technology, paving the way for a new era of growth.
