Eastern Mediterranean Petrochemical Cluster Surpasses $3 Billion in Investment
The Eastern Mediterranean Petrochemical Cluster (DAPEK), developed by Rönesans Holding in Ceyhan and Adana, has entered a transformative phase, with total investments exceeding $3 billion. This increase is primarily attributable to significant projects including a polypropylene production facility and a liquid bulk terminal, valued at around $1.8 billion. The cluster is now positioned as one of the Mediterranean's most integrated industrial hubs, encompassing petrochemical production, port operations, energy infrastructure, and logistics services.
Enhancements and Strategic Growth
DAPEK's extensive development covers an area of roughly 1,300 hectares, designed to consolidate various industrial activities under one umbrella. The strategic vision is not merely about industrial investment but about creating a next-generation industrial ecosystem that promises sustainability and competitiveness in the Turkish and wider Mediterranean market.
Erman Ilıcak, President Emeritus of Rönesans Holding, emphasizes that DAPEK stands for more than just industrial facilities. "With our investment program now reaching $3 billion, we are architecting a competitive industrial ecosystem that combines production sites with logistical infrastructures in close proximity to energy and port facilities. Our goal is to shape DAPEK into a fundamental industrial infrastructure in Turkey for the next 50 years."
Additionally, he affirms that this project targets a prominent role on the global stage, aiming to become one of Turkey's competitive industrial hubs.
International Partnerships and Prospective Investments
Collaborating with the Surbana Jurong Group, a key player in the development of successful industrial zones worldwide, DAPEK aims to draw more international investors by enhancing its logistical capabilities and infrastructure. This partnership, effective since 2026, will aid in expanding their base of stakeholders globally, as well as support sustainable development and long-term growth strategies.
Under new infrastructural enhancements underway, there are increasing efforts to engage a wide spectrum of investors, particularly in high-tech industrial sectors. DAPEK is targeting medium to high-tech investments in petrochemicals, chemicals, energy equipment, composite materials, and biofuels. Active discussions with various companies are in progress to facilitate these investments.
Future Prospects and Strategic Significance
The comprehensive framework of DAPEK is uniquely poised to attract investments with its multi-modal transport infrastructure that seamlessly integrates road, rail, and maritime networks. The vision is not only about creating isolated industrial projects; it's about establishing a thriving industrial ecosystem where production, energy, and logistics enhance each other.
As Turkey grapples with heavy reliance on imported petrochemicals, DAPEK is strategically positioned to bolster domestic industrial production, contributing significantly to the country’s balance of trade. Once operational, the polypropylene production facility is expected to produce 472,500 tons annually, meeting 17% of Turkey's yearly polypropylene demand while generating approximately $300 million annually for the national economy.
Further, these developments will bring substantial local employment opportunities, currently supporting 4,000 jobs, with a projection to reach 4,500 jobs by the project’s completion.
In conclusion, the Eastern Mediterranean Petrochemical Cluster (DAPEK) signifies an essential leap in Turkey's journey to reshape its industrial landscape. Serving as a pivotal hub at the confluence of European, Middle Eastern, and North African markets, DAPEK is ready to deliver a competitively advantageous framework for industries while contributing to a more robust economy.
