Join the Exciting Fun of the Fukagawa Sakura Festival Dance!

Experience the Joy of Japanese Dance at the Fukagawa Sakura Matsuri

The Fukagawa Sakura Matsuri is set to take place from March 20, culminating in a dance performance on April 5 at the mini-stage of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine. This event invites elementary school students to join, specifically encouraging beginners. Students can participate in dance classes, which will run for four sessions leading up to the festival. Even if a child cannot attend all sessions, they can still perform during the event. Additionally, there will be rental options for traditional clothing, including yukatas and kimonos.

Participating in this event not only offers children a chance to engage with their cultural heritage, but it also aids in their emotional development, identity formation, and understanding of international exchange. Embrace the experience of “Odoru in Kimono” during cherry blossom season!

Dance Classes for Beginners

Classes will be led by an experienced instructor who has dedicated over 50 years to the art of Japanese dance. The choreography is professionally crafted to be simple yet deeply rooted in traditional techniques, allowing children to learn basic movements and graceful gestures associated with wearing a kimono. During these classes, participants will also receive guidance on how to dress in a yukata, proper bowing etiquette, and insights about kimono culture. By the end of the course, students in grades 3 to 4 will likely master yukata dressing in just two to three sessions!

This program is particularly advantageous for children who may feel apprehensive about dancing, as Japanese dance is not simply a performance art; it focuses on embodying beautiful movements or shosa while coordinating with music.

Benefits of Japanese Dance

Engaging in Japanese dance serves as an exceptional form of exercise. Movements requiring participants to stand, sit, and lower their bodies effectively strengthen the legs and ankles of children, addressing the challenges posed by a sedentary lifestyle that can lead to injuries. Furthermore, exercising these movements stimulates parts of the brain that are often dormant in daily life, enhancing coordination and cognitive function.

The music associated with Japanese culture helps participants connect with the seasons and develop a soothing, traditional Japanese mindset, promoting emotional well-being.
