Collaboration at Sacramento International Airport to Promote Mental Health in the Construction Industry
On May 28, 2025, leaders from various sectors gathered at Sacramento International Airport for AGC of California's Mental Health Media Day. This significant event brought together construction industry representatives, government officials, and airport partners, all aiming to emphasize mental health as a crucial aspect of jobsite safety and the overall welfare of workers.
Taking place at the site designated for the airport's future Terminal B parking garage and pedestrian bridge, the event saw nearly 100 construction workers interrupt their daily tasks to focus on a critical conversation – mental health. This initiative featured speeches from local politicians, construction leaders, and mental health advocates who shared personal experiences and insights regarding the mental health challenges prevalent in the construction industry.
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) highlighted the importance of mental health, stating, "Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. When we care for ourselves and one another, we build a stronger, safer, and more resilient industry and society." This sentiment echoed throughout the day, encouraging attendees to prioritize mental well-being in their professional lives.
Sacramento County Supervisor Rosario Rodriguez also contributed to the dialogue, emphasizing that mental health care extends beyond just services and hotlines. She advocates for incorporating mental health into daily practices and conversations on job sites. This proactive approach aims to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open discussions in the workplace.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, AGC of California coordinated safety stand-downs across the state, where employers were encouraged to talk about mental health resources available for their workers. These stand-downs serve as a vital opportunity for construction firms to demonstrate their commitment to employee well-being by discussing available mental health resources and the value each leader places on their workforce.
Kyle Frandsen, Vice President of Balfour Beatty, pointed out that impactful construction goes beyond physical structures; it is about the people behind the hard hats. “We often talk about building with purpose. While we’re proud of the structures we leave behind, it’s the impact on people that truly defines our work. That’s why today matters,” he remarked.
Stephen Dummit, President of Tradewinds Leadership and a former electrical contractor, offered insights on how mental health directly impacts job performance and provided attendees with practical mental health and resilience tools. He emphasized the significance of treating mental health with the same level of urgency as physical safety on the job.
Allison Otto, CEO of Otto Construction, reinforced the notion that mental health awareness should not be confined to May. "This is a year-round commitment," she asserted. By using this event as a catalyst for change, Otto urged the industry to create a culture where mental health is treated with the same seriousness as physical safety.
The Mental Health Media Day aligns with AGC of California's ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering supportive work environments within the construction sector. By spotlighting available mental health resources, the organization seeks to engage members in essential dialogues that enhance jobsite safety.
Peter Tateishi, CEO of AGC of California, concluded with an assertive message: "Taking care of our teams goes far beyond hard hats and safety harnesses. It’s about ensuring every person feels supported, valued, and equipped to do their best work." The Mental Health Initiative continues to push for a cultural shift within the construction industry, encouraging proactive measures to support mental well-being.
