Discovering Tokyo’s Soba Delights with Drunk Tsukaji
In a delightful journey through the charming streets of Tokyo's Hikifune, comedian Tsukaji Takaaki from the comedy duo Drunk Dragon ventures out to explore local flavors and culinary gems. The vibrant mix of old-fashioned shopping streets and modern culture offers the perfect backdrop for a culinary adventure. One of the standout destinations on his exploration is the specialty chopstick shop, Edo Kihashi Daikokuya, where you can find beautifully crafted handmade chopsticks in various shapes and colors, boasting around 200 unique designs. Tsukaji tries different pairs and shares his favorites, underscoring the craftsmanship that goes into making these culinary tools.
A Culinary Gem: Hikifune Soba
Next, Tsukaji heads to the bustling Hikifune Station, home to a beloved standing soba shop that has become a go-to spot since its opening in 2020. Known simply as Hikifune Soba, this establishment delights its customers with creative monthly menu items that have garnered quite the reputation. From the innovative Sobaronchino to unique variations like Mentai Aburi Cheese and Curry Potato Soba, the chef’s creativity leaves Tsukaji in awe.
"I think my taste aligns perfectly with the chef; everything looks so delicious!" he exclaims, eagerly perusing the menu. What sets their soba apart is the use of fresh noodles and a rich soup seasoned with agodashi, enhancing the flavor of each dish. One of the café’s highlights is its complimentary fresh egg, adding a delightful touch to the dining experience.
Among their popular offerings, the “three main actors” (known as ‘Sanyaku’) of the shop are the crispy Tempura Soba, the signature Hikifune Soba, and the Osaka specialty, Abura Kasu Udon. Today, Tsukaji chooses to taste the sesame-flavored Pork Tsukesoba, also known as Hikifune Soba. After taking the first bite, he is blown away by the exemplary flavors: "The agodashi is robust and complements the sesame notes perfectly, along with the invigorating taste of bonito and seaweed! It's incredibly delicious!" His enthusiasm is palpable as he can't help but keep eating, thoroughly enjoying this culinary delight.
