Celebrating 25 Years of Impact: FRCF's Anniversary Gala Shines in New York City

A Memorable Night in New York City

On May 16, 2026, the First Responders Children's Foundation (FRCF) commemorated a significant milestone—its 25th Anniversary Gala—hosted in the heart of New York City. The event was a two-part celebration that gathered together supporters, first responder families, and prominent figures, all united in honoring the legacy and future of this remarkable organization.

The festivities commenced with an extraordinary ride along the Hudson River aboard the historic CSX Business Train. This trip was groundbreaking, marking the first time the train found its way into Grand Central Terminal, providing guests with a unique experience that set the tone for the evening. Following the train ride, attendees gathered at Gotham Hall for a ceremonial gala that paid tribute to the post-9/11 landscape, honoring four distinguished individuals while reflecting on the profound impact of FRCF over the past quarter-century.

Jillian Crane, the Chief Executive Officer of FRCF, opened the gala with heartfelt remarks: "This evening was not only a celebration of our past but a commitment to the future of the families we serve." She emphasized the vital role the community plays in supporting the mission and ensuring that first responder families receive the resources they need in times of hardship.

Founded in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, FRCF has established itself as the only national nonprofit focused on aiding the children and families of first responders. Since its inception, the Foundation has made remarkable strides, reaching families in 48 states and supporting over 1.6 million children through various initiatives, including scholarships, mental health resources, bereavement grants, and disaster relief programs.

The gala included a poignant ceremony reflecting on FRCF's origins and growth, with tributes honoring the strength of first responder families. Additionally, the event featured a live auction, with proceeds benefiting the Foundation’s ongoing programs and services nationwide. Keynote speaker, Dan Nigro, the 33rd Commissioner of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), commemorated the 9/11 legacy, acknowledging the vision and compassion of Al Kahn, the Founder and Chairman of FRCF.

A particularly touching moment came when Jenna Bush Hager read a letter from former President George W. Bush, applauding FRCF’s accomplishments in the years following 9/11 and congratulating the organization on its 25 years of service. In a special address, New York Governor Kathy Hochul extended her congratulations, highlighting the foundation's significant legacy and impact.

Throughout the evening, FRCF also honored notable individuals and organizations whose contributions have significantly influenced the lives of first responders and their families. This year’s honorees included:
  • - Patricia Smith, daughter of fallen NYPD Officer Moira Smith, received the prestigious Legacy of Courage Award.
  • - Patrick Lyons, son of a fallen FDNY firefighter, was also recognized with a Legacy of Courage Award.
  • - CSX received the Enduring Impact Award, accepted by Mike Cory, highlighting their commitment to supporting first responders.
  • - iHeartMedia earned the Voices of Hope Award for their contributions, presented by Catalina Stan.

Prominent figures in public safety and governance were present, including FDNY and NYPD Commissioners and even former DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson, a pivotal figure during the events of 9/11. The collaborative support from organizations such as SERVPRO, T-Mobile, and many others underscored the commitment to foster strong support systems for first responders nationwide.

In his closing remarks, Al Kahn reaffirmed FRCF's mission: "Twenty-five years ago, we made a promise to support the children and families of first responders. What has begun in New York City has transformed into a national initiative rooted in compassion, resilience, and hope," he stated. Looking forward, Kahn expressed his aspiration for the organization to continue growing and ensuring that resources are available for every first responder family in need.

The 25th Anniversary Gala demonstrated not only the strong legacy of the First Responders Children's Foundation but also a promise for a better future for the families of those who bravely serve our communities every day.
