Youth Blood Donation Campaign Kicks Off
As winter sets in and flu season approaches, blood donations tend to drop significantly. In response, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched the "Youth Blood Donation Campaign" aimed primarily at those who will celebrate their coming of age this year. The campaign runs from January 1 to February 28, 2024, as part of a nationwide initiative supported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, local governments, and the Japanese Red Cross.
Importance of Young Donors
Currently, many of the blood donors are in their 40s and 50s. Since there is an age limit for donations up to 69 years, the participation of the younger generation is crucial. The campaign emphasizes the importance of their involvement, especially during a time when the demand for blood products increases amid seasonal illnesses.
Events and Activities
Key activities during this campaign include:
1.
Engaging Video Content:
The comedy duo Kawatate, comprised of performers Iwakura and Nakano, along with Elf member Arakawa, will help promote blood donation through an entertaining video that will be shared across social media platforms like YouTube and LINE. Iwakura, who has over ten years of blood donation experience, highlights how easy and positive donating blood can be. The video will commence with casual conversations among the trio in their dressing room, reflecting on the enjoyable aspects of donating blood.
-
Ad Campaign Duration: Mid-January to about two months.
-
Video Availability: To be launched on the official Tokyo Video website.
2.
Awareness Posters:
Blood donation awareness posters will be displayed in local municipalities and schools to further engage the community and educate young individuals on the importance of their contribution.
3.
Leaflet Distribution:
Informative leaflets targeting young people will be distributed at various events including the Coming of Age Day ceremony.
4.
Staff Blood Donation Initiative:
Employees of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will also participate in blood donations, reaffirming their commitment to this cause.
Where to Donate in Tokyo
Individuals can donate blood at permanent donation centers and blood donation buses throughout Tokyo. It’s encouraged to make appointments via the "LaBlood" web service or by calling the blood centers directly. Maintaining a steady supply of blood products year-round requires consistent donations, and volunteers are especially needed on weekdays when donor numbers are lower compared to weekends.
New Donation Center Opening
Excitingly, a new donation center named "Shinjuku South Exit Blood Donation Room" is set to open on January 30, 2024. Conveniently located just a 4-minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station’s south exit and 1 minute from the Toei Shinjuku Line and Oedo Line, this facility aims to make blood donation more accessible.
Transition to LaBlood App
As of January 4, 2024, the process for issuing or renewing blood donation cards and records will transition solely to the LaBlood app. This app not only allows users to make appointment bookings but also enables them to complete pre-donation health assessments and check their blood test results. Although those without the app can still donate, utilizing it is strongly encouraged to streamline the donation process.
The Tokyo Red Cross Blood Center is dedicated to ensuring a safe supply of blood and calls upon everyone, particularly younger individuals, to actively participate in this lifesaving endeavor during the critical winter months. By coming together, we can uphold the health and safety of our communities through the generous act of blood donation.
