Setagaya's Groundbreaking Solar Power Initiative
Introduction
In a pioneering move towards sustainability,
UPDATER, a renewable energy platform based in Setagaya, Tokyo, is set to launch an innovative project known as
Setagaya Peepa (provisional name) in the fall of 2025. This program will offer direct solar power generation for approximately 50 households in the area using reused solar panels. The initiative will harness cutting-edge technologies, including blockchain, to facilitate energy generation from a location that was once an elementary school.
Project Overview
The Setagaya Peepa project will transform the former pool site of the now-closed Ikegiri Junior High School, located at 2-4 Ikegiri, Setagaya, into a solar power generation hub. The construction is set to begin on June 26, 2025, with plans to start offering services to the community in the fall. The project aims to utilize a power output of 55 kWdc and will prioritize local residents in offering around 50 power units through a monthly subscription model that is yet to be priced. This initiative not only will make renewable energy accessible to local households but also represents a sustainable use of resources, effectively integrating circular economy principles by utilizing already existing structures and equipment.
Innovative Use of Reused Solar Panels
The solar panels for this project will be sourced from commercial facilities in the capital region, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability by reusing materials in a manner that minimizes environmental impact. Partners like
Mitsui & Co. Project Solutions and
Rikuxia Co., Ltd. will ensure that the panels, previously used in other capacities, are repurposed effectively. This proactive approach reduces CO₂ emissions during production and lessens waste during disposal, making it a perfect embodiment of resource circulation.
