Ayúdame3D and Bambu Lab Launch Global Design Challenge on MakerWorld

In an exciting collaboration, Ayúdame3D, a Spanish nonprofit organization, has announced a global design challenge in partnership with Bambu Lab, aimed at improving accessibility through innovative 3D printing solutions. The initiative, hosted on MakerWorld—the largest community of 3D creators worldwide—invites designers and 3D printer users from Spain, Latin America, and beyond to conceptualize and create utility objects that enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

The challenge runs from September through December 2026, featuring 24 specific projects sourced from seven different partners. Each project focuses on creating practical tools that address everyday difficulties faced by persons with disabilities. For example, everyday tasks like brushing teeth, making a ponytail, or playing sports can be challenging without tailored tools. With this challenge, Ayúdame3D seeks functional designs like an easy-to-use toothbrush, a one-handed hair tool, and a lightweight basketball controller.

Founded in 2017, Ayúdame3D was born out of a transformative experience in Kenya's Rift Valley. The organization has since dedicated itself to designing and providing 3D-printed assistive devices—known as “trésdesis”—to people with disabilities in vulnerable communities, free of charge. To date, they have served over 1,000 individuals across more than 70 countries, also establishing self-sufficient 3D printing labs in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. Their philosophy combines engineering, empathy, and design to turn daily challenges into accessible and functional solutions across various fields—from prosthetics to sports equipment.

Bambu Lab plays a pivotal role in the challenge as it leverages MakerWorld—a platform known for its extensive collection of free 3D models and designs. Bambu Lab has streamlined the 3D printing process with advanced, user-friendly technology, removing barriers once posed by hardware complexity. MakerWorld connects creators globally, facilitating collaboration between makers and individuals needing assistance.

The Call for Designs
The response from MakerWorld members is awaited within the next two months. Following submissions, accessibility organizations will take one month to print and test selected models with users who fit the description of the respective projects. The feedback gathered will be instrumental in refining the final designs. Winning designs will be incorporated into open libraries and distributed by volunteers reaching communities in need across the globe.

Guillermo Gauna-Vivas, founder and CEO of Ayúdame3D, emphasizes the simplicity yet profound impact of the challenge: “In Spain, we demonstrate how a 3D-printed item can restore autonomy. We invite makers to create practical, specific solutions that can be shipped anywhere in the world.”

Qianye, Creator Operations at MakerWorld, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the concrete nature of the questions posed to makers: “Can you print the necessary piece that allows an individual to manage on their own?”

Impact Measurement
Success will be gauged by monitoring transformations in daily activities enabled by the designs, such as someone completing their dental hygiene independently, or a child shooting baskets without assistance. The goal is for the challenge to produce tangible results that reshape everyday moments for individuals with disabilities.

Through this innovative endeavor, Ayúdame3D and Bambu Lab not only aim to raise awareness about accessibility issues but also to inspire global creativity and collaboration among makers. As the competition unfolds, participants and communities eagerly anticipate how these designs will play a pivotal role in enhancing lives.
