Connecting Gen Z to Local Communities Through VTubers and Innovative Strategies

Connecting Gen Z to Local Communities Through VTubers

On July 22, 2026, the Future Link Network (FLN), headquartered in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, will host an online seminar titled "Connecting Gen Z to Local Communities: Insights from the Creators of 'Machi Supacha'". This event aims to address the challenge many local governments face when trying to engage the Gen Z demographic effectively.

Background of the Seminar

Despite substantial investments in tourism PR and campaigns, information often fails to reach Gen Z and younger urban audiences effectively. When it does, the connection made tends to be one-time, resulting in a lack of lasting relationships with local communities. FLN recognizes this pressing issue and aims to facilitate ongoing engagement between communities and younger audiences. To tackle this, they have collaborated with uyet, an innovative company that has been successfully utilizing popular IP, including VTubers, to create lasting connections through their project, Machi Supacha.

The Machi Supacha Project

Machi Supacha aims to transform the energy and reach of VTubers into a tool for building "relationship population" within local communities. The initiative has already seen success in eight regions across Japan. By inviting VTubers to visit and engage with the local environments, community members, and unique experiences, these digital influencers become fans of the towns themselves, allowing their audiences to also develop a fascination with these places. This dual-layered approach not only cultivates a connection but also encourages fans to become active participants in local culture.

Recent initiatives in cities such as Niimi and Hokota have shown promising results, demonstrating how nurturing these relationships can encourage tourism and increase local engagement, including hometown tax donations. The seminar will feature guest speaker Koji Kanai from uyet, who has spearheaded such initiatives, as well as FLN's Yuji Sasou, who will discuss real-world experiences and insights related to the development of the relationship population.
