Pam Grier Partners with Free TV Networks to Launch Soul Flix FAST Channel

Pam Grier, the iconic actress and advocate, has recently joined forces with Free TV Networks to establish her very own FAST channel, aptly named Pam Grier's Soul Flix. This new channel pays homage to the heroes of Black cinema and is aimed at uplifting stories that resonate within the community. Currently available on platforms such as The Roku Channel and Plex.tv, Soul Flix enriches the landscape of streaming options by focusing on the representation and cultural contributions of Black filmmakers.

In a statement reflecting her passion for this project, Grier expressed her gratitude for the collaboration with Free TV Networks. She noted, "This is a continuation of my lifelong commitment to support independent women and Black film enthusiasts. Our stories do not only entertain; they inspire and empower, serving as vessels for narratives that deserve widespread dissemination. As someone who has personally undergone this journey and has been dedicated to portraying strong characters on screen, I am thrilled to shine a light on the brilliance and resilience of our community. Pam Grier's Soul Flix is a tribute to our cultural legacy."

Free TV Networks CEO Jonathan Katz was equally enthusiastic, commenting on the partnership with Grier. He shared, "We are elated to announce our collaboration with an icon of her stature. Pam's pioneering contributions to film and television have left an indelible mark on the industry; her talent, charm, and authenticity continue to inspire generations. Working alongside Pam to launch this exciting new venture is a privilege that allows us to showcase the cultural essence found within Black film production."

Pam Grier is hailed as the world's first female action star, a title she has carried for over five decades in the entertainment industry. Grier's most notorious role remains that of "the baddest chick in town" in the classic film Foxy Brown (1974). Her body of work includes notable films such as The Big Doll House (1971), Coffy (1973), and Tarantino's Jackie Brown (1997). The latter, inspired by Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch, pays homage to Grier and the notable Black exploitation films of the 1970s.

Grier’s impact isn't restricted just to cinema; she has made significant television appearances in shows such as Miami Vice (1985-1989), The Cosby Show (1987), and The L Word (2004-2009). She also had a noteworthy stage debut in 1985 with Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love, a performance that earned her the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama.

Over the course of her illustrious career, Grier has garnered multiple nominations, including Emmy and Golden Globe nods, and has received various accolades, among them the Special Achievement Award at the 2003 Film St. Louis Horn Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto Black Film Festival in 2024.

Her biography, co-authored with Andrea Cagan titled Foxy: My Life in Three Acts, was published in 2010, further cementing her legacy as a pioneering figure in the entertainment industry.

Free TV Networks, known as a leading independent operator of ad-supported streaming platforms, has set its sights on expanding its offerings to the public. With the establishment of Soul Flix, the numbers of digital broadcast networks under its umbrella have risen to four, with FAST channels multiplying to three.

This expansion comes at a time when traditional broadcasting is experiencing a renaissance alongside a rapid growth in demand for ad-supported streaming channels. Nielsen reports indicate a 13% rise in viewing share for digital broadcast networks in the 2023/2024 broadcasting quarter, with an estimated one-third of U.S. households now equipped with digital antennas. As this market continues to evolve and grow, the introduction of channels like Soul Flix not only captures an audience eager for representation but also aligns with the cultural shift towards more inclusive storytelling in media.

As Free TV Networks prepares to launch additional networks in the future, it demonstrates a clear commitment to fostering diverse content that resonates with a wide array of viewers. Pam Grier's Soul Flix is positioned to be a beacon for aspiring filmmakers and audiences alike, illustrating the rich narratives waiting to be told from within the Black community.
