MLK Community Medical Group Expands Services
In a critical step to bolster healthcare services in Los Angeles, the MLK Community Medical Group has announced the addition of two primary care doctors, an OB/GYN, and several other clinical staff members. This initiative is made possible through a generous $3.5 million grant from Health Net, a prominent name in California’s Medi-Cal managed care landscape. The funding, which aims to address the ongoing shortage of medical professionals, will ensure that vital healthcare services remain accessible to the community for the next three years.
Mireya Fajardo, the vice president and Medi-Cal regional lead at Health Net, emphasized the importance of investing in healthcare professionals. “Clinicians are the backbone of our healthcare system. Their dedication keeps care accessible and communities healthier,” said Fajardo, highlighting how this grant will directly impact individuals needing medical attention in Los Angeles County.
The healthcare landscape has faced significant challenges as patient demand continues to rise while the availability of healthcare workers diminishes. As a result, many patients have found it increasingly difficult to secure timely appointments. This grant is seen as a pivotal measure to fill in the gaps and improve access to care for Angelenos. With the funding, the MLK Community Medical Group will enhance its team by bringing on board two primary care physicians, one obstetrician-gynecologist, a bilingual psychologist, and two certified nurse midwives by the end of 2027.
Dyan Sublett, president of the MLK Community Health Foundation, expressed her gratitude for the grant. “This generous support from Health Net will help bolster our clinician workforce, ensuring that more patients receive the care they need, when they need it,” she said. Sublett pointed out that sustained investment in healthcare providers is crucial not only for individual health but for the community's overall well-being.
This grant marks a continuation of Health Net's commitment to workforce development within California's healthcare system. Recently, Health Net pledged over $9 million to enhance the state's physician pipeline, supporting individuals from early education through to medical school. This strategic initiative aims to secure the future of healthcare, ensuring that there will be enough professionals to meet the community's needs in the years to come.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell recognized the value of Health Net's investment in the community. She stated, “Health Net's support for one of our South LA community assets is a welcomed investment and a testament to the quality healthcare services MLK Community Medical Group provides to countless residents.”
