Steady Growth in RIA M&A Activity: Key Insights from Echelon Partners Q3 2026 Report

Steady Growth in RIA M&A Activity

Echelon Partners recently published its RIA M&A Deal Report for the third quarter of 2026, revealing that merger and acquisition activity in the wealth management sector remains robust. During this quarter, the firm tracked an impressive 125 transactions. This figure ties with Q3 2025 for the second-highest number of deals recorded, following a previous high of 142 in Q1 2026. With this steady pace, Echelon forecasts that the total number of deals for the entire year could reach approximately 510, surpassing last year's record of 466.

When analyzing the market's performance, it is noted that the ongoing stability is characterized by substantial capital availability and distinct roles among market players. Notably, private equity firms played a significant role, being directly involved in 102 of the 125 transactions, whether as investors or sponsors. These private equity firms provided the necessary capital for significant investments in large platforms through minority equity stakes, while strategic buyers – predominantly backed by private equity – executed most acquisitions.

Echelon's CEO Dan Seivert emphasized the distinction between announced transaction volume and the real-time merger and acquisition activities. He pointed out that while announcements are important, they are often lagging indicators of true market dynamics. In their experience, they noted continued strong seller inquiries and buyer interest in processes related to marketed transactions.

Key Trends Influencing Q3 2026 Activity

As the report details, there are emerging trends reshaping the landscape of RIA mergers and acquisitions:

1. Niche Acquisition Focus: There has been a noticeable trend where buyers are prioritizing niche firms that serve specific client communities or offer scalable service capabilities. For instance, The Vistria Group’s investment in Curi Capital highlights interest in companies catering to medical professionals, while Corient’s acquisition of Music Row Wealth Management showcases focused service offerings for country music artists.

2. Private Equity Dynamics: Even though private equity-backed acquirers were involved in 92 of the transactions or 73.6%, this represents a slight decline from previous records. Interestingly, registered investment advisors (RIAs) have made a record-setting contribution in this space, accounting for 81.6% of transactions. This indicates a growing diversification in the transaction landscape.

3. Capital Events Driving Large Deals: The largest transactions during this quarter were minority investments showcased as capital events rather than outright sales. These include notable stakes such as Merchant Investment Management's acquisition of a 25.9% stake in Ironbark Financial Group, and significant investments in Savant and Prime Capital by Hamilton Lane and Carlyle, respectively. These strategic moves signify a shift in how major players are allocating resources.

4. Decline in Large Deal Volume: The report also revealed a decrease in the number of large deals conducted by serial acquirers, indicating a potential strategic pivot towards integration rather than merely aggregation of assets.

5. WealthTECH Growth: Wealth technology (WealthTECH) continues to flourish, achieving a record 51 transactions during Q3 2026. This uptick reflects a growing convergence of platforms, signaling an evolving technological landscape within the sector.

In conclusion, the Q3 2026 RIA M&A Deal Report indicates that the wealth management industry is poised for a record number of transactions this year, driven by favorable market conditions, ample capital, and emerging trends in client servicing niches. As Echelon Partners looks ahead, they anticipate that 2026 could become the most prolific year for M&A activity in the history of the industry.
