Europe's Rapid AI Growth Faces Major Content Management Challenges
The Stark Reality of Europe’s AI Boom
Europe is witnessing an extraordinary surge in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, with a staggering increase of 650%. Yet, amidst this rapid growth, a critical imbalance emerges: the content management systems that support these innovations are faltering. According to a recently published benchmark study by Hyland, which surveyed 3,000 IT decision-makers across Europe, the digital transformation landscape presents a troubling paradox: while organizations are investing heavily in cutting-edge technologies, they neglect the foundational infrastructures that enable sustainable innovation.
The Digital Maturity Index Insights
In its annual Digital Maturity Index, Hyland revealed that Europe’s overall digital maturity score climbed to 69 out of 100, a promising increase of six points from 2025. However, this progress masks severe weaknesses in content services maturity—an essential element for AI scalability—which plummeted by 13 points to 56. Notably, this decline is the only one across various categories surveyed, highlighting a critical miscalculation by organizations: They aggressively pursue AI and automation while failing to support the operational frameworks those technologies require.
Nearly 60% of organizations report that their innovation pilots are stalling, primarily due to fragmented and inaccessible data. This situation suggests many companies are treating digital transformation as a superficial upgrade, rather than a holistic overhaul of their data governance and management strategies.
The Rise of AI and the Pollution of Data
The data presents a clear narrative of misaligned priorities in AI deployment. Currently, 15% of European organizations claim to have fully integrated AI across essential systems, a remarkable increase from just 2% in 2025. However, 54% acknowledge that their documents and data are too
