Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum Appoints Laura Putnam as New Exhibitions Curator

Announcement of Laura Putnam’s Appointment

The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art (AGB) at Florida Southern College has made an exciting announcement, appointing Laura V. Putnam as its new Curator of Exhibitions. This decision follows her impressive journey at the museum, where she has played a pivotal role since 2013, ultimately serving as the Manager of Exhibitions and Adult Programs. Her extensive experience in the museum sector encompasses over a decade of dedicated service, showcasing her deep institutional knowledge and impressive achievements in both curatorial and programmatic aspects.

The Executive Director of The AGB, Dr. Daryl Ward, expressed strong confidence in Putnam’s capabilities, stating, “Laura has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, creativity, and a deep commitment to our mission.” After evaluating her accomplishments closely and engaging in dialogue with various industry colleagues, it became evident that Putnam is the ideal candidate to drive the museum’s curatorial vision into the future.

Putnam’s rise to this prominent role comes after a period of significant curatorial responsibility, following the departure of Dr. Alex Rich, the former Executive Director and Chief Curator. During recent months, she adeptly guided the museum's exhibition program, marking her as a key figure in maintaining the museum's high standards.

In her new position, Putnam will lead the conceptualization and execution of all exhibitions hosted by the museum. This includes responsibilities such as original research, artwork selection, and the development of interpretive materials. Moreover, she will collaborate with internal teams to ensure each exhibition resonates with the museum’s mission, serving as the main liaison with artists, scholars, and partner institutions.

Upon accepting this new challenge, Putnam remarked, “It is a privilege to step into this new position, and I look forward to working with the incredible team at The AGB.” Her tenure at the museum has already seen her successfully oversee complex exhibition logistics, which encompasses scheduling, budgeting, shipping, and installation. Her expertise has been highlighted through her curation of a variety of dynamic exhibitions, including notable works like Darkroom Alchemy: Photographs by Jerry Uelsmann, Surreal Scenarios: The Art of Susanne Schuenke, and The Medici Dynasty: Renaissance in Florence.

Beyond her work at the museum, Putnam also shares her knowledge as an Adjunct Professor of Art History and Museum Studies at Florida Southern College. Her courses delve into essential topics like curatorial practices and the evolution of museums today. Putnam's academic background is equally impressive, holding a Master of Science in Arts Administration from Boston University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, specializing in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art is recognized as a not-for-profit and community-focused institution aiming to enrich lives through engaging and inspirational art experiences. It stands as the largest and only nationally accredited visual arts organization in Polk County and uniquely holds the title of the only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum within Central Florida. Recently, the museum expanded its facilities with the opening of the Dr. Anne B. Kerr Wing, which added 14,000 square feet of exhibition and education space, including six new gallery spaces and multi-functional classrooms and event venues. The museum operates from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sundays from 1 PM to 5 PM, and is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is free, supported by its Sustaining Partners, the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation, along with Dr. Alan and Linda Rich.

In welcoming Laura Putnam to her new role, The AGB is poised to enhance its offerings, inspiring further community engagement and exploration within the art world.
