Experience the Ocean: Mesm Tokyo's Summer Workshop
On August 2, 2025, Mesm Tokyo, part of the Autograph Collection, will host a one-day special workshop designed for children and their parents titled
"Experiencing Tokyo's Ocean: Learning About Intertidal Zones and Food". This exciting event aims to connect families with the vibrant marine environment while fostering a sense of responsibility towards ocean conservation.
Located in the lively Tokyo Bay area (Minato Ku, Kaigan 1-10-30), Mesm Tokyo is known for its innovative approach to luxury and commitment to sustainability. The event will feature special guests from the Japanese branch of
Sailors for the Sea, an international NGO focused on marine environmental improvement. In collaboration with the
Takeshiba Town Design organization, which advocates for urban development in the waterside area, the workshop promises an immersive educational experience.
Workshop Details
The workshop will kick off with an environmental lecture introducing children to serious issues affecting the world's oceans and the state of Tokyo Bay. Led by Hirokawa Nobuya from Sailors for the Sea, the session will delve into essential topics like
“What is Blue Seafood?” and
“What Can We Do?” All presented in a way that is engaging and understandable for younger audiences. The goal is to equip children with knowledge about the marine ecosystem and inspire them to think about their role in safeguarding it.
Following the lecture, participants will enjoy a special menu crafted by Mesm Tokyo's Head Chef, Kumamoto Kome. This meal centers on the concept of sustainable seafood, aligning with the United Nations’ guidelines for responsible fishing practices. Diners will have the chance to learn through taste, appreciating the delicacies of the sea while understanding the importance of making environmentally friendly choices.
The day will conclude with an exploration of the intertidal zone at the Takeshiba tidal flat, situated just outside the hotel. As the evening cools, families will venture out to observe and collect various flora and fauna. Utilizing traps, they will gain firsthand experience interacting with species such as mullet and gobies, showcasing the rich biodiversity present in Tokyo Bay. This hands-on activity presents children with a rare opportunity to connect with nature and understand the ecosystems they live among.
Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability
Since its establishment in 2020, Mesm Tokyo has operated under the brand concept of
“TOKYO WAVES,” emphasizing local engagement and environmental initiatives. The hotel has previously launched workshops, such as the
“TOKYO WAVES WORKSHOP Chapter 1,” organized in cooperation with the National Museum of Nature and Science, and has received praise for its commitment to educating future generations about marine environments.
The upcoming workshop will allow families to explore, learn, and engage deeply with their surroundings, all while making it a fun summer research project for children. The workshop is not only an educational event but also an opportunity to promote sustainability among the youth.
