Introducing Invox Carbon Accounting: A New Solution to Support Corporate Decarbonization Efforts

Launch of Invox Carbon Accounting

Invox Inc., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has recently unveiled its new service, Invox Carbon Accounting, on May 19, 2025. This innovative platform employs AI to estimate emission coefficients based on accumulated invoicing data, allowing businesses to efficiently calculate greenhouse gas emissions up to Scope 3. Moreover, it assists companies with green procurement strategies and carbon credit utilization for offsetting their emissions, providing a comprehensive support system for corporate decarbonization management.

The slogan for the initiative is "A society where all businesses engage in decarbonization management." Through the introduction of Invox Carbon Accounting, Invox aims to facilitate companies in their decarbonization efforts while striving towards creating a sustainable society with reduced environmental impact.

Understanding Carbon Accounting

Carbon accounting refers to the process by which businesses quantify, analyze, set reduction targets, and report their greenhouse gas emissions. It is suggested that the organizational boundaries and transaction information utilized in carbon accounting align with financial accounting data, typically divided into three scopes:
  • - Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions from within the organization.
  • - Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity.
  • - Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, including those from the supply chain.

Context Behind the Launch of Invox Carbon Accounting

Since the industrial revolution, technological advancements have significantly improved our quality of life; however, this progress has also led to exacerbated global warming. Concerns have been raised that a 1.5°C increase in the earth's average temperature could have drastic effects on human society and the natural environment. Reports predict that multiple organizations may indicate a temperature rise exceeding 1.5°C as early as 2024, highlighting the urgency for effective measures against climate change.

In response to this growing crisis, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced in February 2023 the comprehensive implementation of an emissions trading system by the fiscal year 2026 in its Basic Policy for Achieving GX (Green Transformation). Additionally, companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime are now mandated to disclose the business impacts related to climate change, and initiatives to reduce emissions across supply chains have already begun, with further expansions expected.

Despite these advancements, a survey conducted by our company revealed that only about 10% of respondents are currently engaged in carbon accounting, even when including companies planning to take action within a few years, this figure barely rises to 20%. Among small businesses with fewer than 30 employees, this percentage drops to less than 5%, pointing to significant barriers.

Survey Overview

  • - Method: Online survey focusing on invoicing services.
  • - Period: January 27-28, 2025.
  • - Participants: Employees in accounting departments handling invoices.
  • - Total Valid Responses: 412
  • - Employee Size Classification:
- 1-29 employees: 103 responses
- 30-99 employees: 103 responses
- 100-299 employees: 103 responses
- 300 or more employees: 103 responses

Given that many small and medium-sized enterprises, which constitute the majority of Japanese companies, struggle with the necessary investment and securing human resources for carbon accounting, progress toward decarbonization management remains hampered.

To address these challenges and promote a society where any business can engage in decarbonization management, Invox has formulated a new service through its Invox series, specifically focusing on carbon accounting.
