Experience Authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony at Keio Plaza Hotel's Shofuan Teahouse

Reopening of Shofuan Teahouse at Keio Plaza Hotel

Keio Plaza Hotel, located in the heart of Tokyo, is set to reopen its traditional teahouse, Shofuan, on April 6, after a hiatus for renovations since May 2024. Established in 1971, Shofuan is renowned for providing a serene slice of Japanese culture within the bustling city. The teahouse will now offer intimate tea ceremony experiences conducted by a certified tea master, complete with English explanations.

The cultural experiences have been tailored to cater to the diverse clientele of the hotel, where approximately 80% of guests are international travelers. This initiative aims to enhance the value of their stay by immersing them in Japan’s rich traditions through specialized workshops and cultural immersions.

Experience Overview

Location:

Located on the 10th floor of the main building, Shofuan provides a tranquil space that transports visitors from the urban hustle into a world of refined aesthetics and ritual.

Program Categories:

1. Tea Ceremony Experience (1 hour):
Participants will enjoy a meticulously prepared program that includes a demonstration of the art of tea-making (temae) performed by the tea master. Guests can savor matcha tea alongside traditional wagashi (Japanese sweets). The experience involves purifying rituals, entering the teahouse through a traditional small opening, and learning about the significance of various ornamental details within the teahouse. This program is designed to awaken the senses and allow individuals to experience the Zen mindset typical of these ceremonies, all while embracing the spirit of ichigo ichie (one time, one meeting).

2. Chaji (Tea Making Experience, 1.5 to 2 hours):
Following the tea ceremony, participants will engage in hands-on practice, preparing their own matcha. This immersive experience encourages interaction and comparison between the tea brewed by the teacher and the participants, allowing them to appreciate the nuances in flavor.
