Experience Coexistence with Wild Birds at Tokyo Square Garden
Tokyo Square Garden, located in the Chuo Ward of Tokyo, has embarked on an innovative project to promote urban wildlife interaction through the installation of the Kiyobashi Nest Box. Opening on April 2, 2026, this initiative, developed by Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd. and Hakuten, aims to enhance the living space for wild birds while offering visitors a chance to observe them through live cameras set inside the nest boxes.
The Kiyobashi Nest Box
The Kiyobashi Nest Box is an outstanding example of regenerative design, utilizing waste materials such as pruned branches, dried leaves, and construction scraps from the Tokyo Square Garden area. Designed to resemble a bird's nest, these boxes are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, blending harmoniously into the environment. The project features two distinct designs:
1.
Cocoon Nest: This organic-shaped nest box mimics the feel of a small egg, designed based on insect cocoons found in surrounding trees. Its egg-like form is durable and efficiently manages rainwater, providing a safe and comfortable living space for birds.
2.
Growing Nest: Created from pruned logs sourced from Otemachi Tower's greenery, this nest box seamlessly integrates into the surrounding flora. Its design offers camouflage, protecting birds from potential threats.
Furthermore, a unique feature of the project is the
Nest Material Stand, where visitors can contribute biodegradable materials collected from Tokyo Square Garden events, enriching the nesting experience for local birds.
Live Viewing Experience
Equipped with a small live camera, each Kiyobashi Nest Box allows visitors to witness real-time activities as birds select materials for their nests and create their homes. A monitor positioned at the building's entrance will offer a glimpse into this natural process, engaging urban residents with the ecosystem on their doorstep. This
