Introduction
The city of Yokohama is set to welcome a new urban development, the
JP Bayside Hub, at the site formerly occupied by Merpark Yokohama. This innovative space, covering approximately 1,000 square meters, aims to foster community engagement and enhance the Yokohama waterfront's vibrancy. The official opening date is November 1, 2025, with some areas expected to open earlier on October 11, 2025.
Urban Development Goals
In alignment with the vision for the Yamashita Park area, which focuses on creating an attractive waterfront for global visitors, the JP Bayside Hub will serve as a critical connectivity point for a range of transportation modes. These may include electric vehicles (EVs), bicycles, electric kickboards, and more, which will encourage seamless movement throughout the area. This project is a collaboration between
Japan Post Real Estate, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, and the
Park Line Promotion Council, which comprises prominent companies such as Taisei Corporation and Pacific Consultants.
Sharing Mobility Services
Diverse Options for Transportation
At JP Bayside Hub, a suite of sharing mobility services will make commuting more accessible and environmentally friendly:
1.
Walking Area Mobility: Users can rent next-gen mobility aids that co-exist with pedestrians at speeds below 6 km/h. These include devices that are allowed in public spaces and can also be used in Yamashita Park. Operated by
At Yokohama Co., Ltd, this service gives easy access to light mobility options.
2.
Bike Sharing & Electric Kickboards: Residents and visitors can utilize bikes and e-kickboards available for short-term rental across established port locations. This service is set to have one of the largest rack counts in the Yokohama city center's waterfront area, bringing together firms such as
Docomo Bike Share, OpenStreet, and Luup.
3.
Car Sharing: For those in need of vehicles, eco-friendly Toyota options, including EVs and hybrid cars, will be accessible through the site, managed by Toyota Rent-a-Lease Kanagawa and Toyata Rent-a-Lease Yokohama.
Community Gathering Spaces
Experience Unique Local Culture
The Bayside Hub will also host a community-focused space featuring a
Trailer House Cafe called
VISITORS DOCK | Brew & Blend. This cafe will serve locally inspired smoothies and a colorful quiche made from fresh, regional ingredients. It aims to create an inspiring atmosphere reflecting the intersection of nature and urban life.
Outdoor Spaces
In addition, an event area with environmentally friendly artificial turf will be included, providing a calm green space for gatherings, leisure, and various events. This
“芝生ひろば” (Grass Plaza) encourages relaxation and connectivity with nature, emphasizing Yokohama's historical waterfront.
Conclusion
With initiatives like the JP Bayside Hub, Yokohama is on its way to becoming a model for modern urban living—a place where diverse transport modes encourage engagement, and cultural experiences blossom. Through collaborative efforts focusing on public space improvements, this hub will contribute to the enhanced local value and overall livability of the Yokohama area.
