Smartkem and RiTdisplay Forge Alliances for Innovative Display Technology Integration

On March 24, 2025, Smartkem, a pioneering company focused on revolutionizing electronics with advanced transistor technology, announced a significant memorandum of understanding with RiTdisplay Corporation, a prominent developer renowned for its optoelectronic solutions and passive-matrix OLED displays. This strategic partnership aims to explore the feasibility of incorporating Smartkem's innovative organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) technology into RiTdisplay's Gen2.5 pilot production line, thereby enhancing Smartkem's ability to prototype cutting-edge display products.

The collaboration between these two forward-thinking companies has evolved from an initial joint development agreement established in 2021. As part of their ambitious vision, they are simultaneously working on a government grant-funded project that commenced in 2024, with a mission to create the world's first commercially viable active-matrix OLED display utilizing OTFT technology. This project represents a significant leap towards commercial readiness and is anticipated to culminate in the operational readiness of the integrated Gen2.5 pilot line at RiTdisplay by the latter half of 2025.

Robert Chen, General Manager of RiTdisplay, articulated his optimism for the partnership, stating, "This phase of our collaboration signifies a substantial advancement in our efforts to deliver a new generation of AMOLED displays to the global market. It underscores both companies' commitment to innovation and commercial success. We are eager to showcase customer demonstrations later this year and expedite the acceptance of OTFT-based AMOLED displays across various market segments. Our alliance with Smartkem opens up fresh avenues while we continue to refine our existing display technologies such as PMOLED and OTFT."

For Smartkem, this agreement propels its strategic objectives of commercializing its unique transistor technology, enabling them to offer prototyping capabilities for the very first commercially available AMOLED display built on OTFT technology. Smartkem’s Chairman and CEO, Ian Jenks, remarked on the importance of this initiative, emphasizing the potential impact on the broader display industry and the technological advancements achievable through their partnership with RiTdisplay.

The memorandum of understanding, however, is a non-binding agreement and carries inherent uncertainties relating to the execution of a definitive agreement, alongside the evolving terms that may emerge from future discussions.
