Discover the 125th Itabashi Rakugo Performance
The 125th Itabashi Rakugo event will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Itabashi Cultural Center's small hall, organized by the Itabashi Foundation for Culture and International Exchange. This special event revolves around the
Narimono Banashi theme, emphasizing performances enhanced by unique sound effects.
Narimono, which translates to “sound effects,” is a crucial aspect of Rakugo and other Japanese theatrical arts. It incorporates various instruments such as drums, flutes, and bells to enhance the narration, bringing stories to life with auditory experiences that convey character actions, environmental changes, and seasonal nuances. Attendees can expect an exciting take on traditional Rakugo, making this a refreshing experience compared to typical performances.
Additionally, aiming to attract a younger audience to Rakugo, the promotional materials have been designed by a popular young illustrator, Koinko, who has garnered attention primarily on social media platforms. This engaging approach aims to spark interest and encourage younger generations to participate in the rich tradition of Rakugo.
Rakugo’s Rich History in Itabashi
Commonly referred to as
Itaraku, the Itabashi Rakugo Association was established in 1983 with the mission to nurture young Rakugo performers in the Itabashi area. Over the years, the group has experienced generational change, yet it remains committed to its legacy. Each member proudly announces their featured performances in advance, enhancing the audience's anticipation. Furthermore, the event includes live musical accompaniment, along with a special farewell gesture where all performers see off the audience, a unique aspect that sets Itabashi Rakugo apart.
Currently, all members performing are accomplished
Shinn tate (top-tier performers), guaranteeing that audiences will be entertained by their diverse styles and exceptional talent.
