CATL and DHL Strengthen Partnership for Sustainable Global Logistics Initiatives

CATL and DHL Join Forces for Sustainable Logistics

In a significant move towards sustainability, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has solidified its collaborative efforts with DHL Group, a leading global logistics provider. On January 27, 2025, the two companies signed a strategic agreement focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions across logistics parks, marking a vital step in their commitment to fostering environmentally friendly practices worldwide.

Details of the Agreement

Under the auspices of this strategic alliance, CATL will supply DHL's logistics parks with advanced liquid-cooled energy storage systems along with energy management platforms. These systems are designed to interconnect seamlessly with battery exchange systems and ultra-fast charging capabilities, establishing a comprehensive energy storage solution that optimizes energy structures across DHL's facilities. This initiative aligns with DHL's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions in logistics by the year 2050.

In addition to addressing energy storage solutions, CATL is committed to enhancing the future of electric vehicles, battery recycling, and the management of retired batteries. Their innovative approach in electromobility is set to benefit from DHL’s global network of Electric Vehicle Centers of Excellence.

Libin Tan, Co-President of Sales and Marketing at CATL, emphasized the synergy of the partnership, stating, “By combining DHL's extensive logistics and operational expertise with CATL's innovative green technologies, we are set to offer pioneering sustainable logistics solutions to the industry. This enhanced collaboration not only supports the sustainability goals of both parties but also facilitates a pathway to a greener future for the world at large.”

Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Supply Chain, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, saying, “We are pleased to begin utilizing CATL’s energy solutions in our logistics parks while offering our logistical expertise in return. This arrangement highlights our exceptional partnership and showcases the innovation of our teams. It exemplifies collaborative efforts to achieve a shared goal — sustainability.”

Background and Future Plans

This framework agreement serves as the realization and expansion of a memorandum of understanding previously established by both parties last year. The memorandum emphasized a global collaboration targeting carbon-neutral facilities and the electrification of DHL's vehicle fleet for pickup and delivery services.

To bring cutting-edge technology to a broader audience, CATL has deliberately chosen DHL as its preferred logistics service provider. This strategic decision has been facilitated by DHL’s expanse of Electric Vehicle Centers of Excellence, which promotes the implementation of integrated logistics solutions.

As CATL and DHL forge ahead with this vital partnership, their joint efforts could lead the logistics industry toward a more sustainable future, characterized by innovative energy solutions and reduced carbon footprints. The ongoing collaboration exemplifies how strategic alliances can foster advancements in eco-friendly practices, setting a new benchmark for sustainability in logistics worldwide.
