AARP Pennsylvania Welcomes Community Challenge Grant Applications for 2026

AARP Pennsylvania Welcomes Applications for 2026 Community Challenge Grants

AARP Pennsylvania has opened applications for its 2026 Community Challenge grant program, inviting eligible local nonprofit organizations and government entities to apply before the March 4, 2026 deadline at 5 p.m. ET. This essential program aims to fund quick-action projects that focus on improving the livability of communities in Pennsylvania, enhancing public spaces, transportation, housing, digital inclusion, and more.

Celebrating its tenth year, AARP will increase its investment this year, with over $8 million allotted for grants. These funds are part of a nationwide initiative called Livable Communities, which seeks to transform cities, towns, neighborhoods, and rural areas into enhanced living environments for all residents with a special focus on those aged 50 and older.

According to Bill Johnston-Walsh, the State Director of AARP Pennsylvania, "The Community Challenge grant program allows AARP Pennsylvania to collaborate closely with local residents, advocates, and policymakers, enhancing the quality of life for all ages while addressing the distinctive needs of Pennsylvanians aged 50 and older. We are thrilled to broaden our support this year and look forward to making a substantial impact, fostering stronger, more livable communities throughout the Commonwealth."

Grant Opportunities

The AARP Community Challenge now features three different grant avenues:

1. Flagship Grants: These grants focus on enhancing public spaces, transportation, housing options, and digital connectivity. Projects can secure funding ranging from a few hundred dollars to $15,000.
2. Capacity-Building Microgrants: Designed to improve walkability, bikeability, and home safety modifications, these grants come paired with expert support and educational webinars, each providing $2,500 for eligible projects.
3. Demonstration Grants: Aiming to replicate exemplary initiatives, these grants promote pedestrian safety and improve internet access, funded by corporate partners such as Toyota Motor North America and Microsoft. Awards can vary from $10,000 to $25,000 depending on the project's scale and impact.

Nancy LeaMond, AARP’s Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Engagement Officer, emphasized the significance of these grants, stating, "The impact that our Community Challenge grants have had in cities and towns across the nation is notable, supporting everything from crosswalks and home improvements to fostering greater community engagement. We eagerly expect to amplify the program's outcomes in the coming decade."

Since its inception in 2017, the AARP has invested $24.3 million in more than 2,100 livability projects across the United States, including 48 in Pennsylvania. This grant program actively supports a diverse range of community types, from rural to urban areas, especially focusing on the needs of residents aged 50 and older.

AARP Pennsylvania works closely with various communities throughout the state, helping connect residents and supplying necessary resources and expertise to ensure the enhancement of living conditions for all age groups. Noteworthy initiatives include advancing age-friendly housing through accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and promoting Complete Streets and Vision Zero initiatives aimed at creating safer environments for pedestrians and cyclists.

Application Process

The Community Challenge is open to eligible 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations, along with government entities, while other types may be assessed on an individual basis. Grants can cater to various project sizes, supporting small, short-term activities or larger long-term efforts.

The application window is open until 5 p.m. on March 4, 2026, with a requirement that all projects must be completed by December 15, 2026. Interested parties can submit applications and access information about previous grant recipients by visiting AARP's Community Challenge website.
