Analyzing Corporate News Trends of TSE Prime Listed Companies in 2024

In 2024, a study analyzed the announcement trends of companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) Prime. It was found that nearly 70% of the approximately 120,000 annual announcements fell under the category of 'corporate activity news', which was notably concentrated around March and during the autumn season. This research aims to quantify how these companies communicate through their official websites and press releases by utilizing a tool called 'Release Times' from FutureSearch, which automatically collects and categorizes such information.

Research Objectives and Methodology

The research focused on announcements made by TSE Prime listed companies throughout the year 2024, resulting in a selection of 1,254 companies for analysis. The method involved gathering information from corporate websites and press release distribution services via 'Release Times', helping to classify announcements into two categories: corporate activity news and management information news.

Categories Defined:

1. Corporate Activity News: Includes product/service launches, events/advertisements, awards/recognitions, sponsorships/agreements, and seminars.
2. Management Information News: Encompasses earnings/plans, stock proposals/shareholder changes/own shares, personnel changes, shareholder meetings, and funding announcements.

Key Findings

The report highlighted that corporate activity news comprised 84,515 announcements (approximately 71% of the total), with product/service launches making up 60% of this category.
  • - Notable Products Launched:
- Suntory Foods International: Released a limited-edition product, 'Horoyoi (Taiwan Lychee)'.
- Toyota Motor Corporation: Introduced a special edition of the Crown sports car, available exclusively through designated Crown shops.

Monthly Trends

The news peaked in March, reflecting a surge in product announcements aligned with the new fiscal year, totaling 5,086 announcements. The month of January showed the least activity, with only 3,830 announcements.

Event/Advertisement News

Event-related news accounted for 14,378 announcements, with October (1,707) being the peak month, coinciding with autumn promotional campaigns and trade shows. January recorded only 864 announcements.

Awards and Recognitions

The awards and recognitions segment saw 6,798 announcements, with March being especially active (1,191), correlating with many annual recognition events. In contrast, August showed the least activity, with just 355 announcements.

Assembly/Agreement News

With 5,963 announcements, March also stood out as the top month for sponsorship and agreement announcements, with January presenting the lowest activity.

Seminars and Workshops

Seminar announcements totaled 5,556, reflecting a steady output, particularly in September, while April noted the least announcements.

Management Information News

Management information news comprised 33,831 announcements (about 29% of the total), predominantly focusing on earnings and future plans.
  • - Earnings and Forecast Announcements:
- Dai-ichi Life Holdings: Announced their financial results for fiscal year 2023.
- Ajinomoto Co.: Discussed their financial outlook for the second quarter of fiscal year ending in March 2025.

Noteworthy Trends

The earnings-related announcements peaked in May (2,781) and November (2,952). Other peaks were observed around the second and eighth months due to quarterly earnings reports.

Social Media Influence

Another focal point of the research was the impact of social media presence on corporate announcements. Companies with social media accounts showed a higher propensity for corporate activity news (74.3%) compared to those without accounts (68.4%). This indicates a trend where companies actively engaging on social media are also more proactive in their communications.

Conclusion

The study revealed that TSE Prime listed companies primarily focus on product/service news, showing distinct seasonal peaks in March and autumn. Meanwhile, management information news largely aligns with financial reporting periods and shareholder meetings. Companies employing social media strategies tend to exhibit robust communication practices, amplifying their outreach and engagement.
