Boehringer Ingelheim Introduces Innovative PREVICOX® Chewable Tablets for Tailored Dog Care

Boehringer Ingelheim Launches New PREVICOX® Chewable Tablets

Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading name in animal health globally, has announced a significant advancement in veterinary medicine with the release of their new Quarterable Snap-Tab design for PREVICOX® (firocoxib) chewable tablets. This product is now available following the endorsement of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is set to make a positive impact on both veterinarians and dog owners across the country.

The innovative design incorporates double scoring, allowing owners and veterinarians to effortlessly divide the tablets into quarters. This feature is particularly beneficial as it enables accurate and flexible dosing based on the dog’s weight. Dogs as light as seven pounds can now receive tailored dosages, helping to manage pain and inflammation effectively. The new quarterable tablets offer combinations of 57 mg and 227 mg, providing a broader range of options suited for different sized dogs.

PREVICOX® is a COX-2 selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), approved for use in treating pain and inflammation linked to osteoarthritis and after surgical procedures. Dr. Russ Drury, Executive Director of Veterinary Professional Services at Boehringer Ingelheim, emphasizes the importance of this new tablet design, stating, "This new tablet design provides a number of benefits to veterinarians and dog owners, with the ability to more easily tailor dosing that can improve outcomes and ultimately enhance the quality of life for more dogs."

In addition to its clinical advantages, the new design is also a step towards sustainability. Once a tablet is divided, it can be safely stored in its original packaging for up to one month, minimizing waste and streamlining material use across its lifecycle. Coming along with this new tablet are updates to the packaging, which will switch to a taller, industry-standard round bottle, further enhancing efficiency by eliminating unnecessary cotton and reducing environmental impact.

Despite these exciting updates, key aspects of PREVICOX® chewable tablets remain unchanged. The formulation and dose strength options of 57 mg and 227 mg, the child-resistant and senior-friendly opening system, as well as bottle counts will not be altered. These enhancements will be phased in throughout 2026 and 2027, starting with the 60-count presentations of PREVICOX® 227 mg and 57 mg.
