Chicago Designates Navy Pier as New Starting Point for Iconic Route 66

In an exciting move marking the centennial anniversary of Route 66, the City of Chicago has officially declared Navy Pier as the new starting point of this legendary roadway. A Historic Move

Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed that this decision symbolizes how the iconic roadway continues to evolve while still respecting its roots. From the vibrant shores of Lake Michigan to the distant Californian Pacific coast, Route 66 captures the essence of the quintessential American journey. The formal dedication ceremony is set to take place on March 25, 2026, and will honor the road’s significant role in American history, culture, and adventure.

The designation was reached through a resolution introduced by Alderman Brendan Reilly and was subsequently adopted by the Chicago City Council. According to Reilly, “Route 66 has always been about dreams and possibility.” By placing Navy Pier at the route's eastern terminus, Chicago's historic importance as the starting point is reverently recognized, fostering a dynamic link that embodies the very spirit of the American journey.

A Connection to the Past

In 2009, Route 66's endpoint was moved to Santa Monica Pier, California. However, the new designation at Chicago's Navy Pier creates what officials have described as a “Pier-to-Pier” connection. An impressive new sign marking Navy Pier as the elegantly renamed 'Beginning of the Trail' will soon be installed. A Day of Celebration

The kickoff event is strategically aligned with the Opening Day of the baseball season, beautifully intertwining the two celebrated American traditions – the iconic road and America’s pastime. To amplify the festivities, Harry Caray's eatery at Navy Pier is set to host its 28th Annual Worldwide Toast to Harry Caray, remembering the beloved Hall of Fame announcer. Grant DePorter, CEO of Harry Caray’s, remarked that the late Caray embodied the spirit of Route 66: freedom, optimism, and the rewards of the journey.

“Harry grew up along Route 66 in St. Louis, learned to drive on Route 66, and took Route 66 to Wrigley Field for his first game. The significance of having the road’s journey begin at Navy Pier is immense for us,” DePorter emphasized.

The lovingly themed toast commemorating Route 66 will feature an array of roadside attractions, live music, and entertainment—including performances by Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's, classic car displays from the Volo Auto Museum, along with alpacas from the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences representing Arizona’s roadside features.
