Huawei Celebrates GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Tech4Nature Project in Mexico
Huawei and Partners Win the GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award
Huawei made headlines yesterday as it secured the prestigious GSMA Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM award for "Social Impact in Latin America". This recognition was granted for their innovative project, Tech4Nature, which focuses on protecting jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo Nature Reserve located in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The award was presented during the M360 LATAM 2026 event, celebrating contributions that leverage technology for environmental preservation.
The Tech4Nature project is a collaborative initiative involving the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative. This partnership harnesses cutting-edge technology to monitor and conserve the natural habitat of jaguars, a vital species in the Yucatan region that is currently threatened with extinction.
According to Samira Herrera, the Director of Communications and Public Relations at Huawei Mexico, “This award showcases the power of technology when used for the benefit of both people and the planet.” The Tech4Nature initiative exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can positively impact local communities and biodiversity preservation.
Launched in 2022, this ongoing project has entered its second phase of implementation, involving crucial partnerships with local government, the Polytechnic University of Yucatan (UPY), the non-profit organization C Minds, and the communities of Dzilam de Bravo. The initiative integrates advanced species detection technology, artificial intelligence for identifying individual animals, and monitoring strategies that actively involve local stakeholders and connect government, academic circles, civil society, and private businesses.
Regina Cervera, project coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico and a member of AI for Climate from C Minds, noted, “Tech4Nature Mexico demonstrates that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordination, collective action, and environmental policy.” This collaborative approach aims to utilize AI to serve ecosystems, ensuring sustainability for communities relying on these resources.
Since the project's inception, 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices have been installed within the reserve, successfully identifying over 147 animal species, including 40 that are endangered. Noteworthy progress includes the identification of 16 individual jaguars, providing critical insights into their behavior, migration patterns, and conservation strategies necessary for their survival.
Huawei's cloud solutions play a vital role in processing and analyzing field data. Beyond capturing videos of jaguars, the system has collected and automatically analyzed over 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings, enhancing the monitoring of local wildlife and ecosystems. The analytical insights drawn from this data informs better understanding and decisions that contribute to biodiversity preservation, influencing public policy in related fields.
The protected area has also seen increased conservation efforts, expanding from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and data analytics have allowed Tech4Nature Mexico to construct a sustainable scientific model for conservation that merges scientific innovation with local community involvement. Additionally, Huawei's wireless communication solutions significantly support the transmission of ecological data, a topic that garnered considerable attention at the M360 LATAM 2026 event.
Held on May 13 and 14, the event attracted regional and global leaders from the tech ecosystem, mobile operators, and government representatives, all focused on discussing how modern technologies can contribute to a better future for everyone. The GLOMO LATAM award highlights companies and initiatives that redefine technology, digital connectivity, and social development in the region. The recognition for the Tech4Nature Mexico project underscores its innovative approach and its capacity to deliver meaningful social and environmental benefits across Latin America.
Through the implementation of Tech4Nature Mexico, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to utilizing technology as a tool for creating a more sustainable and inclusive future while supporting local community development and environmental protection.
